I believe it, I hit 45 mpg acrossed ohio doing 65ish in my focus on a trip last summer. Acrossed a whole tank of gas.

day to day I was closer to 31 in the winter though, and about 35-36 in the summer.

fiance's focus with an auto struggles to get over 33 mpg day to day and 35 mpg highway.

Yeah if you go by ratings the cruze gas gets damn near what the cruze diesel will get, and at what cost?

Same with the focus, I beleive mine were rated at 37 (manual) and 38 (auto) highway. We saw 40 out of the manual on pure highway trips under 70 mph when conditions were perfect......I'm not sure 45 mpg of diesel is even worth it.....

City driving KILLS the focus, I mean drops it into the high 27-28 mpg range. I am curious if the diesel cruze has a strong advantage there?

Between all the recalls and upkeep it should be new by 80k.

The rabbits have been doing it since the 80's. But they took how long to get up to 70? That and the material was so thin to save weight any kind of moderate collision resulted in death. The reason caddy's are so popular is because you have a bed to protect you somewhat.

I DGAF about MPG I look at CPM. If you look at CPM a volt(or other hybrid) makes a lot more sense.
Assuming 15 mpg. and a 100 mile round trip

A diesel($5/gal) will cost .33 CPMx100=$33
A gas($4/gal) will cost .27CPM $27 over 100 miles
Propane($2/gal bulk) .13
Propane($4 non bulk) .27
Electric (.15kwhx8h/50 miles .024 then .27 for 50 miles). .138 average/100mi
LNG($1.5gal).10
Over a 100 mile trip

$33.00 Diesel
$27.00 Gas
$27.00 Propane(non Bulk"RV")
$13.00 Propane(bulk)
$13.80 Electric
$10.00 Natural Gas

I plan on having 20 gallons of propane and MPG of 15. This equates to a range of 300 miles before I need to pay the higher RV prices. Once the NG network grows to a point I can practically install a heavier 10 gallon tank I plan on switching over.

Here is hoping for more widespread use of LNG.

The network is growing daily. But, is is not still not large enough for the average absent minded driver that expects a gas pump every 20 miles.

I'll settle for an honest 34-36 highway (36 in states like OH and VA with rigorously enforced lower speed limits) and way more room in my Malibu. I can get 28-30 all-around in warm weather - 26-29 in cold weather with liberal use of remote start...

Isn't part of the diesel appeal that it doesn't feel like a turd while pulling down those MPG's?

It seems most cars that are gas you have to baby to get that kind of mileage, I was under the impression the diesel actually feels kind of sporty due to the low end torque, making it more fun to drive while you get the MPG's.

The compact bows with a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that boasts 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with full twist coming on at just 2,000 rpm. What's more, the common-rail, direct-injection diesel features an overboost function that allows the engine to deliver up to 280 lb-ft of torque for 10 seconds at a time. Even with 10 more horsepower and 110 more pound-feet of torque than the available turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder in the Cruze, the 2.0-liter diesel engine can return up to 42 mpg (highway) bolted to its six-speed automatic transmission.
That was the part I was looking at as well. This should make it a fun little car.

I wish they wouldve put it in a different platform.. The Cruze is a horrible car IMO.. not to mention the 4 months i spent doing Retro fits on them for the various fucks up with early production But we have one and there is nothing about the car we like.. trunk space lacking.. rear seat cramped.. low head room.. all of these are to be expected with a compact car but for what we pay I would expect more car..

I never understood the fascination for great highway fuel economy if you didn't drive for a living. If you're spending that much time in the car, maybe it's time to find a new job or to move closer to work. I don't get paid to drive so any time spent in the automobile is on my dime and on my time. I'd probably be more interested in combined or city driving mileage increases.

So I'll keep my 18mpg truck. Even on that crappy Barton stopsign uphill onramp on M14 I can be at 70mph before running out of ramp. Not going to do that in a shitbox. Also not going to stop at the lumber yard to pick up a 4x8x3/4 sheet of plywood on the way home from work.

If they made a GM fullsize with an LSA I'd go buy one as soon as they were available. The direct-injected 6.2L with AFM has my attention.

I hope lots of people buy shitboxes. Because then the CAFE can be met for the fleet and maybe GM will put out a LSA halfton.

I got rid of my 98 xj. I fell out of love for it. Not to mention the gas would have been a car payment!!!! So....I bought a shitbox. Ya see. I have a really good job. I use to kind of live close to work, but my old neighborhood started going to shit. My credit was excellent so I got approved for a 2nd mortgage. My wife wanted to move out further from the city. I didn't mind it, but I needed to get rid of my xj for a shitbox. It wasn't very reliable and had some issues. So I sold it and bought....a shitbox. :( Between my gas, insurance, and car payment it pretty much equals out to what I would be paying in gas for an unreliable xj. Now I would love to work closer to home, but my employer loves me. They depend on me. They know I get the job done. Maybe that is why they never bother me and I run my own department....but yes I would love to work closer to home. It is just not in the cards for me to do so. Yeah I have a long commute to and from work. Yes it sucks. I wouldn't call wanting a shit box gas sipper as a fascination, but more along the lines of smart thing to do under the circumstances. I do however love my 13mpg truck and 15mpg jeep. I hope you enjoyed my un-indented paragraph. :d:

I just sold my 92 cutlass commuter and my 00 F350 driveway ornament and just bought a new 1/2 ton. Besides the pmt ownership costs are a wash. Plus I get to drive a nice vehicle every time I leave the house. Living 2 miles from work helps...
