I had a whole battle with AT&T. They were my only internet option. I live in the sticks and I was the end of the line. My internet was shit and went out constantly, especially when it rained. Got starlink and absolutely love it. I bought mine at Best Buy. Of course I paid 499 and the next month it dropped to 299. Oh well money well wasted.

Did you get the Mini or the standard one that's down to $300?

Thinking about getting one for camping. I'd get the mini if it was $400 in a heartbeat because it runs off 12v or PoE and it's tiny. Everywhere I camp seems to have no cell.
Standard. The mini doesn't have a separate wifi router, so if you get that then you need to keep that in mind that the dish is also your wifi point. If my research served me correctly......

If you buy a Starlink and only use it for camping, what’s the connection fee?
The standard Starlink is $120/mo and if you use the Roam feature (what you'd need for camping) it's an extra $30/mo. There is a starlink mini as well that has a 50gb a month plan you can use while traveling too for $50/mo.

It's also worth noting that you can shut off Roam if you're not using it, and you can also turn starlink service on and off. So you can buy the hardware, and only pay $150/mo during camping season and then stop paying and store the starlink in the camper over the winter, if you want.

Said goodbye to Dan's Blue Whale today. I thought I would wheel it a bit then tear it apart and work on my M715 using it's parts. It was just too iconic looking to tear it apart, and it needed a fair amount of work to get it safe to wheel again. I really need to focus my time on my existing projects. It still made me sad to see it go, I get way too connected to my vehicles. I may have kept a souvenir off it though 😝

The new owner seems ecstatic to get it and that patina. Hopefully it stays on the trails, he said he was going to try and get it out to 4Fest.

I don't have "roam" but can travel with my standard Starlink equiptment ($120/month), it just cannot be used while in motion. The small one was not available at the time, but I can now add it for an additional $30/month. But, it's not that big of a deal just to bring my big one and set it up at camping locations.

Back in December, Starlink was cost prohibitive for me unless you didn't want "in motion" capability. Now that it's $50/50GB and $1/GB after that... in motion... it is very enticing. Finding quality cellular data plans is around that (that you can turn off when not in use).

The Mini has a built-in WAP that you can disable if you want (use it like a regular Starlink antenna). The enticing part for me with the Mini is that it can run on 12v-48vdc. So you can run it on POE or off coach power.

Fixed = doesn't move (like your house)
Roam = can go places, but not in use over 10mph
Mini Roam = can go places at over 10mph (aka in-motion) but limited to 50GB
Mobile (AKA In Motion) = works at speed (over 10mph)
Mobile Priority = works at speed and get preferential treatment

The plans for Starlink change continuously so who knows what next quarter brings. The plans are like $35/month in central america and have fewer restrictions... and the Mini is just $200 elsewhere.

The Mini with the Mini Roam plan is enticing to me because I'd use it while on the go, as well as when I got to the destination.

Interesting...I wonder if you're grandfathered in some now. Because according to everything I found online and Starlink's tech support, what you're saying is isn't true. The $120/mo is only if you're at a stationary address and not using it at additional locations. Who knows anymore though
