So this year i made a whopping $9760.59 and paid $605.13 in social security, and had $350 fed tax withheld and $424 state tax withheld. According to turbotax i still owe $58? WTF a kid that i worked with made a little over 10k and is getting back nearly $500. My parents claim me as a dependent, but so does the kid i work with. Does this sound weird to anyone else? In the past i've never had to pay anything but always have gotten at least a few hundred dollars.

yeah that sucks know the feeling...this is the first year i actually made some money and get to claim myself...hopefully i will get some$$ back

As for you i would make about as much as you in years past and get about 300-400 back but i claimed 0 on the w-4

Who do you owe the $58 to? State/Fed/both?

Fucking state taxes always come out of the left field for me, and I end up owing. And yes, my withholdings are what they should be for my status.

I owe it to federal. I can somewhat understand what you mean; seeing that everyone else is receiving as they age and of course will earn more and pay more, but still my parents never pay they actually get a little over 14k back. I would at least think i would break even.

I also did that. Next year should be even better.

And before any financial guru's put their two cents in about wasted capital, yes I know. But at this point in life I have no confidence in the U.S. economy. Right now, piece of mind suits me better.

Don't cheat your taxes, getting audited is a bitch.

Needless to say, ever since 16, I've gotten back a few hundred dollars or more each year from federal and a two hundred or so from the state. My dad also cuts me a nice check come tax time as well. :D

I paid almost 18k in federal tax alone last year. Would you like me to add state and fica to that number? Just tell your parents "your welcome"

Hey Skooter, since your what 30? and all, can your parents still claim you as a dependant?

Taxes suck, life is tough and then you die. Ps don't ever own your own business or do work as an independent contractor. Last year I did some side work that I made a whopping ~$2400 on the 1099 and had to pay ~$500 of it back.

I actually just got a job as a tax preparer, and yeah 58 is what I came up with too just by doing it real quick in my head, and using a tax table.
Your parents probably won't be getting as much back this year if they claim the EIC because you're 19 and the cutoff is under 19(unless you're in school full time).

Do you rent or do you stay with your parents? If you rent do you pay heat in your place? If either of those are true you could get the homestead credit and the home heating credit on your state return.

i was actually planning on claiming my tips and mileage just so i could write off car problems; however, i guess the car used for work has to be inspected before duty :sonicjay: I guess i'll just have to do some under the table work to make up for my loss
