Wife found a house she wants for us. Problem is I love the fact that our current morgage can be handled by just one of our incomes. This house my wife found requires both of our incomes!!
She said the house would make her happy !

One womans opinion got him into this situation. Does he really need another woman giving him opinions?

I vote no too.....she might think the house will make her happy.......but having less money in the budget will spoil that in a hurry.

New houses "need" all kinds of little things like curtains, paint, landscaping.....etc. Not to mention if the house needs "updating", like cabinets, floors.......

It's not just the expense of the mortgage payment.....

Good Luck........

Tell her she needs to get a better job so you can still afford it on one salary. I think it's crazy in this economy to mortgage yourself into a bad situation. We lived for years on one income and didn't miss a beat because we were smart enough to think about the "what ifs."

In a few years you will be free of kids and wont need a bigger house anyway.
I agree with both these statements. I'd imagine the wife would not want just a new house, but new furniture all around, landscaping, paint, etc. It would add up quickly. Unless your wife is the type to like having a baller house with milk crates and pizza boxes stacked up for furniture.
Then again I'm 23 and have not bought a house.

If the woman in my house got everything he asked for we'd have house on 20 acres with character and a huge barn, Bones' old buggy, 20 project cars, 10 motorcyles, a dirtbike and snowmobile for each of us and a cottage up north ....while he was a stay at home "mom" to our kitties.

Thank God I'm the one that makes sense of our money.

My idea of happy, small house, big pole barn with lots of toys in it. Preferably with some acreage.

Big pretty new houses = big house, heat, and cooling payments and usually an association that tells you what wattage light bulb you must have in the porch light not to mention what you can or cannot park in your own damn driveway. No thank you!!

Another chick voting against.

How do you know you aren't describing the exact same house?:fish:

We were looking at the same Dave...nice big houses with a pool, big garage blah blah blah. If you can swing it happily on dual income go for it if it is what you both want. We went with a cute fixer upper with lots of equity in it in a great tiny subdivision. Best part is that the house note and utilities can be taken care of by either one of our incomes. If one us were to fall ill, god forbid we could survive. With the economy in the shape it is not a good choice to be way upside down unless you can be. Good luck in your house hunting.

I know where you can get 60 acres for 225 a month. 75 miles from the nearest wal mart.

I can tell you first hand how it works if one of you gets sick. Im fortune it enough to have a very small house note and thank god i did when i had to take time off work. Disability dont cut it if you need a 40 hr check to cover the mortgage payment. Thankfully we can make it on the wifes income for now. I vote stay with what you got and pay it off. Then sell and put lots of money down on new place.
