Wanted to come home with an 870 home defense and a lever action .22 for my wife. Ended up with a Daisy 901 (still made in the USA) for her and a pellet trap. :sonicjay:

Seriously. :d: We just spent an hour and a half in the basement sighting it in (cheap chinese scope), then shooting the silhouettes in the trap. We moved on to plastic bottles, tin cans and lightbulbs. :woot: We had a blast. :d:

Was looking at several really sweet used .22s there - My favorite was a marlin lever action, but I want to get her to a range and see what she thinks of real firearms.

Question - I found subsonic .22 rounds (about 700 fps) - anybody know if these are relatively quiet? I'd love to get her target shooting, and it would be a plus if I could use short rounds at the house.

Is the key word as quiet as can be A little quieter then a normal .22 but still heard. not enough to cycle the slide.

the main boom from a gun is when the bullet breaks the sound barrier so those are definately alot quiter. you can also get the "cb shorts"(i think that is what they are called) those sound like a pellet gun(almost).

Shorts or CC caps in a bolt action .22 will be quiet.

A Ruger 10/22 is a great all-around choice for a reliable .22 rifle.

the only time i ever used them was in my neighbors gun. he shot squirrels on the birdfeeders. they were quit enough the neighbors didnt bitch.

I'm most likely going to buy a .22 cal air rifle for the vermin around the house and I think my wife is going to get a Henry H001 Lever action .22 for her next gun "tier". :d:

I like the fact that the .22 air rifle won't go as far in the neighborhood if I botch a shot.

1128 fps is the speed of sound at sea level, any pellet gun that shots above that will have a nociable crack. If your looking for quite, the Gamo Wisper is 52% quieter than a standard 177 cal 1000ftp/1200fps PBA.

Crossman released the Benjerman Super Streak, its a really nice break barrel, They have a 1500FPS 177 and a 1100 22 cal version, thumbhole stock and an amazing scope. We sell Gamo, Beeman and Crossman at work, I am a big fan of Gamo.

One other thing, dont fall for the super speed super lite weight pellets, most of them have the tenancy to tumble after a rather short distance.

the only problem i've found with the subsonic rounds is u need more of a twist to keep them acurate.....they tend to tumble and go way off target if u dont use the right twist....and a x2 on the not cycling the bolt on a semi auto

Gr8, currently, I'm using a coworker's weihrauch HW97K carbine (0.177) with beeman hollowpoint pellets. Know all about the speed of sound - that's why I'm thinking of a decent 0.22 air rifle around 1000 fps (using reasonable weight rounds) - so the net energy is higher.

Gamos don't seem to have good reviews at Cabelas, and I definitely do not want a break-barrel because the relationship between your scope and barrel changes everytime you reload.

bingo. The scope that came on my break barrel is useless. BUT, it's quite accurate w/ open sights. Nothing wrong w/ learning how to shoot well w/ open sights.
