Anyone recommend a good product for trying to stop water from seeping through the walls of cinder block basement? I think it's coming through where the block meets the poured floor.

Few weeks ago we had quite a bit of water, but we also had 5 inches of rain, so I didn't think too much of it. Last night we had another decent thunderstorm, and wet floor again. I haven't been able to sit down there in a good storm and see exactly where it's coming from, but it seems like there might be something cheap that you can apply from the inside as the first step before starting to excavate the foundation.

I finished my basement this winter and I wanted to make sure no water would come in (usually had 2 small puddles after rain). I used a concrete/masonry crack filler to get any visible cracks then used a DryLock-type of product. If you're getting a lot of water, then that probably won't fix it. The best way is to move water away from the house - make sure the grade is sloped away and the gutters drain away from the house. I installed drains near the problem areas and ran them out into the yard. Where the driveway met the wall I hit with more crack filler and put more drainage it. A couple more feet of gutters and i don't think I'd get any more water in the basement, but what I've done is working so far.

Best stuff I've ever used is thoroseal and should be available at most lumber yards or masonary suppliers.

Also do you live in the country? Do you have a sump pump? If you're in town you should have tile around the foundation that ties into the city sewer. It that's your situation you should have a cleanout around the house that can have a snake run through. If you do you can have someone come out and clean them out for you which should help the situation as well...

Thanks guys. Yes, there is a gutter system, but it was plugged up by leaves and it didn't have a drain away from the house. I'm going to try to fix that up tonight.

Thanks for the heads up about the tile cleanout, bearlys. Yes, it's in the city with public sewer.

I rent the house from a young teacher, so I'm trying to figure out the most cost effective options I can present to her.

My neighbor used some type of 2 part paint to a room in his basement. As far as I know it isn't leaking. It was not Drylok. I sold a lot of that at the hardware.
