My company wants me to visit Ford Mexico to give some training. I would be flying into Mexico city.

Would you be concerned going there with the state of things down there right now?

In the past I have visited the Chrysler plant in Saltillo and the GM plant in Touloca but skipped flying into MX city both times thankfully.

I might be able to get an escort from the airport and no not the assless chaps wearing escort you were thinking of Scooter :sonicjay:

Yes you should be concerned. I would require an armed escort from the time you step off the plane.
Thats not a good place to visit right now.

Thanks not sure either my company or Ford can afford that right now but it aligns with my concerns. So on Monday I should tell my boss that I am pussy and I would rather wait until the US takes them over, or I need a couple kilos to give to my kidnappers in case of emergency

Are you just flying through Mexico City, or is that your destination?

I don't tend to worry about mexico, I go many times a year to Guadalajara, connecting sometimes through mexico city or monterrey. Worst I've been to in Mexico is Juarez, thats not a nice place.

Just don't wander around at night or by yourself, I don't see any issue. We follow 'normal' travel rules there, compared with, say when we are in Sao Paulo, where you don't even get into a car unless you know the driver.

Yeah the guy that sits next to me went to Brazil late last year he said it was not a pleasant trip. He had a driver the entire time.

If I were the one going I would make sure when I got there I would be in normal street clothes. No suit, jeans/shorts t-shirt.

The relations are edgy at best right now and have personally cancelled a vacation because of the standings.

Sooo, let's say I had to go. Would you go as soon as possible or wait until they threaten to fire me or pay one of my co-workers to go, who looks Mexican?

If its me, I go and be done with it. Hell, sometimes I'm given less than 24 hour notice to be in Mexico the next day. Or China, or Germany, or Brazil, and Australia and Thailand are creeping into the picture.

its my job, so I go. Of course, I'm also moving up the ladder ahead of people who have been here longer because the bosses know who understands the big picture and who doesn't.

I went to Saltillo to the Cooper Standard plant last November.
Stayed at the Camino Real which is fenced, and has security.
They have two restaurants and a bar on site so I didn't have
to venture out. The plant arranged transportation and talking
to the owner of the outfit, I think it was safe. I have the same
dillema to face soon. I have four kids, and am very hesitant
to risk the trip. But if I don't go, someone else will, and there
goes my business. I feel for your situation. Good luck.

I just did a machine install in Monterey, had a blast. Just wear old clothes and see if you can get an inturpeter/driver. Mine knew the city and all the fun places the avg. tourist will never get to go. I have been to Mexico alot and its much safer than working in Ecuador. It could be a fun trip.

Shrug, I never realized people are that afraid of mexico. I was there a month ago, I do my usual stuff, go to some local favorite restaurants, walk 1/2 to the liquor store (Ay, Super La Playa, how I love your 5 aisles of tequilla), etc... Only times we've had concerns was when we were out walking around at about 2am.
