I swear. Girls these days think they can do anything. :teehee:
Next thing you know they're going to try to vote! In elections!
I think that you would all find that these 2 young individuals are far better equipped to make decisions, respond to emergency situations and attempt to save their own lives in the middle of the ocean than most of the GL4X4 population is swim in their own bathtub.

I haven't told you how much i Love you lately.

This reminded me of that <3
Sure, just like if your house catches on fire, you are going to put it out and rescue everyone inside by yourself right? No 911 for you, your more responsible than that.

What about if your kid fell down a well? Are you going to dig it up your self?

How about if your kid gets kidnapped? you going to hunt down the kidnapper?

She was sailing around the world by her self, this wasnt some fly by night decision. Her parents are no more capable of rescuing her from the ocean than you are at finding a kidnapper.
I wouldn't be able to find my kidnapper, no, but for your analogy to be close to apples to apples to this situation, I'd have to put my kid in the middle of Somalia with a note attached to her that says belongs to wealthy family.

If I put my house next to a blast furnace.

If I put an open well next to a swingset. Who has a "Lassie" style well anymore? lol

If you need rescuing, by pure accident or horrible turn of events, its one thing. To put someone in a situation where there is a high chance of needing rescue with only the help of others to depend on is my point.

End Womens Suffrage!
More power to her and her family. I don't really think age has all that much to do with an adventure trip but rather experience. Using Leah's description, I would venture to bet she has far more experience than many people older than her that attempt the same thing.

Was it a higher risk to attempt it in this season? Yes. Has it been done in this season before? Without researching it, I would guess yes.

It amazes me how many people want to criticize someone who does something just because they have money.

If your kids gets hurt skiing at Mt.Holly, you will refuse help from the Ski Patrol right? I mean you decided to put your kid out on the dangerous hill where people get hurt every day. Or do you not let your kids do anything where they might get hurt? Do they drive down I75 ever? Lots of accidents on that road.

My point is that she is not just out being stupid trying to sail some POS boat somewhere it shouldnt be. She wouldnt be attempting this with out alot of planning, saftey measures, experience, etc. Shes not some kid out floating around in a tin foil balloon. Doesnt matter if she is 16 year old girl or 40 year old man, its a dangerous trip and she is bad ass in my book.
I have a ton of mixed feelings on this whole thing. When i was that age I wanted nothing more then to sail around the world alone. Hell today I would still do it, 6-7 years ago I was doing shore support for some of the guys who did the around alone race and was toying with doing it myself. there are HUGE risks involved and huge rewards. The boat she is on is far from a yacht.. it is a stripped down race boat that sponsors payed for. its no yacht to be sure.

now as for her record attempt it has long since been out the window since she has had to make two stop over already for issues with the boat. There is a Kiwi who has already done it non stop around alone and she got a ton of grief in the media for being to young. As for Abby, the boat was not in the full pimped out race boat trim meaning no spinnaker and no spin pole. that is key as if she lost her rig she should be able to jury rig something and "limp" the boat home at around 100 miles a day. slow to be sure but it would get her home. now since there is no mast, and nothing to ghetto fab up a rig she was screwed. It sucks but glad she is ok and it will make for a great story in a book I am sure will be out shortly that I will end up buying and reading because I am a HUGE solo sailing dork.

there is nothing better then being on the water alone, as there is no one to tell you your wrong

I should have married you. Then I wouldn't be afraid to drown in the bathtub anymore :(

I would be paying for the ski patrol. My insurance would then pay for the hospital bill. Her parents aren't paying for her rescue or if she needed medical attention.

I'm not trying to bash her... more the parents.
should the fire dept not come to your house when its burning down i mean you have a garden hose right? listen here is the simple black and white truth about all these it costs tax payers money bullshit. We have to go out and train anyways, those pilots and boat crew are already getting payed regardless if they are sitting on the ass back at the station watching tv or out on the boat and in the air. the fuel is already there to be used be it training or real missions. Yes in this case I am sure they will end up billing them for the quaintis airline charter and the fishermen who diverted should bill as well but the rescue personnel this is there job its what we chose to do.

I have been a patroller at Mt. Holly for 10 years. You would not believe how often that happens. You think if their kids helmet was shattered into 3 pieces (and not a cheap helmet) they would listen to us.
AWwwwww, Now the family is saying they won't pay the $300,000 bill from the Australian Government for the rescue. :sonicjay:

also:
" It was also revealed yesterday the American Sailing Association refused to sponsor Ms Sunderland's solo circumnavigation bid, citing concerns about the timing of her trip " Obviously! People were saying she could never make it through the indian ocean in the winter.

Being a good parent < forcing your kid to set a record
