im gone be buying a truck in the next couple weeks and im thinkin it might be easier to tow it home if i can find a trailer to borrow or rent. now my question is do you think a 2001 f150 with the 5.4 would be able to tow a full sized ram on a trialer?

Not sure if it helps or not but I have towed my Bronco to KY and back with a 03 F150 w/5.4l. And had no problems. My bronco on the trailer, trail ready with extra parts and tools weighed in at 7k. It had plenty of power.

What kind of full sized ram? Stock or modified? reg cab half ton or 1 ton diesel 4x4 ext cab? There's a BIG difference in weight throughout the ram lineup.

For a one time tow trip, I don't see an issue with it. Just stay 65 or less. Might be slow, but who cares.

Now, if you are using that truck to tow a modified ram to all your 4x4 events, it'd probably get to you.

We hauled a 79 bronco from the petoskey area to Holland with my buddies 2001 f150 crewcab and it had no problem at all. He actually had to pay attention to his speed because it was very easy to pick up speed even fully loaded.

Yeah, I'd have no worries. Just take it slow. Be wary as you approach highway speeds for the first time, to make sure you don't have any wierd sway.
