Sometime last year, my wife and I started planning a trip out west for this Labor Day. The plan was to drive it all, maybe camp some, but mostly staying in cabins and hotels. At the time our choice of vehicles for this 4,000+ trip were:

2010 Aveo (Hell no)
2004 Duramax (First choice, but still 11 years old)
And...
2004 Colorado that I built on here (11 years old and 230,000 miles and 37s)

So I came up with a new plan. The wife had just gotten a new job with more pay, so the decision came to sell everything and buy something new for the road trip. Since I'll be selling my toys and tow rig, it needed to be something cool with enough room for all our gear for a 2 week trip, and capable offroad. Lucky enough for us a family member works for Chrysler, so we started shopping for Rubicons online. We ended up with an awesome deal on a 2015 Hydro Blue Rubicon Unlimited.

Forgot to take a picture of it new so I stole this off the web.



First time off the hard pack.




First thing on the list, was a lift. Ended up doing a 2" spacer lift and FOX IFP shocks from Poly. 35x12.50r17 Cooper Discoverer STT's on stock wheels with 1.5" spacers.









Next on the list was a winch bumper. Running a Warn M8000. Bumper build from 3/16 steel, the tube is 1.75x.120 DOM. 14, 1/2" bolts hold it on. Factory fog lights and tow hooks reused.

Next up, the wife wanted a step, so I added some tube to the factory sliders.




Since I knew I wanted to hit some trails out west, I wanted to be a little more prepared. Added a small shovel and tool kit. I like to keep my nice tools in the garage so I picked up a small tool kit from Harbor Freight. I mounted them with Quick Grip Clamps, that I found at Summit.

Why not bring tools that dont suck to the places where you might need to count on them working?


I've had good luck with the hand tools. I wouldn't rely on electronics from them but the kit has 3 ratchets and multiples of most sockets. It also helps that I'm not working on an old rusty jeep. I also have a tire iron to remove tires and any other bolt that is a 3/4 or 19mm. Best part is won't be upset when I drop a wrench or socket in a mud hole or leave it on the bumper.

Of course. Not many updates. Went to moundsgiving, added some scratches. Also installed a CB radio using the rugged ridge mount over the rear view mirror. Also added some nice parts to the Christmas list to make me more prepared for Snofari.

Now that the semester is over, I finally got around to getting the front bumper powdercoated. Dropped it off at Quality Powdercoat & Sandblasting in Highland.

Going with a textured black, more like sandpaper and less like bed liner. It should look pretty good and hold up very well.

Now that school is done for a bit, I hope to get started on a rear bumper soon.

Got the bumper back. Really happy with it. Just need to mount the winch and fog lights.
