Okay, first off I feel like a total idiot for having to ask this but here goes. I picked up an '88 GMC Jimmy Sierra Classic full size last Saturday for 1000 bucks and the tailgate window is power and it doesn't work. I already tested the motor and it's no good so I'm getting a new one. Here's where it gets interesting. I can't find the switch that powers it. In the center of the dash there is one that works the power lock for the tailgate and the driver's door has a door lock switch and window switches but I don't see one to work the power tailgate window.

the switch should be the one in the middle of the dash, were the dual tank switch would be if it were a truck

the tailgate dose not lock actually because the handel is inside. the key on the back actually is a switch too for window up and down along with the one in the dash

The switch is right in the middle of the dash above the ashtray next to the rear window defogger, it has arrows up and down. How did you test the motor? These trucks the tail gate must be shut in order for the window to work, there is a contact switch that must be made in order for the window to go up, the reason for this is so you cant roll the window up while the tail gate is down, if you try shutting tail gate while window is down you will break the window.

OK well thats where I thought the switch was but there was just 3 wires hanging out and when I touched the center one to eather of the ones on the side I heard a click that sounded like the tailgate locking/unlocking so I guess that was the motor. The way I tested it was I stripped some of the insulation from the wires going to the motor from the inside of the tailgate and hooked some wires to that and to a battery and I heard it trying to move the window. I don't have a key for the doors or tailgate. The truck only came with ignition keys. It came with 6 keys.....but there all ignition keys. So What you guys are saying is there is a way to manually crank the window down and open the tailgate if I have a key for the tailgate? And do you think I can get a key made by a locksmith or something like that? Thanks guys.

unhook the cable from the motor and run it in a power drill thats what i had to do on my 88 because the motor was bad

im shure you could find a replacement switch/key assy from a junkyard if they have any k5/burb's also they were available with a manual window that the key spot opend up to a crank

How did you do that? My window was stuck down because that contact was not made when I shut my gate and I thought the motor was bad also, so I took the panel off and all I could see was glass and everything was behind the window with no access to anything.

well I got the motor working. i just tried making it go up and down a bunch of times and it finally broke free so it works now. Now I have a new problem.... even with it all the way down the tailgate won't open  I know that the is supposed to be a saftey thing that makes it only open if the window is all the way down but I don't know what it looks like. There is a a metal rod that moves straight down when I pull on the tailgate handle but nothing else moves.

the glass has to get to the bottom of travel for it to unlock. if its sticking up at all its not unlocked. it should have a tab that sticks out from the lock rod that the glass catches on
