I got a 2003 superduty with a v10, I notice lately after towing a trailer with my air on a ticking sound starts coming from the engine compartment. It is a fast repetitve tick almost pacing the sound of the motor, I am not sure if it happens when the air is off but last time it happened after cool down and the next startup there was no sound. Yesterday I popped the hood to try to track it down and the ticking started to slow and then stopped.

Almost sounds like a stick in the fan blade but it is all clear.

Thanks for any ideas

Look over the exhaust manifolds.Usually the passenger side.Seems to be a span of a few years that Ford used some crappy steel for the manifolds. They tend to warp and create a tick.I get the same thing on occasion(03 F150) same as a friend of mines does as well.Check the bolts as well he actually had to torch out a couple that broke off and put helicoils in.I said screw it and am going to headers.Good Luck.

its most likely the exhaust manifolds studs. the studs break and slowly over time they start to leak. it will get worse and worse. my 02 v10 superduty did the same thing.
its a pita to fix. the dealer sells a newer updated stud to stop the problem. look for black soot or dust around all the manifold studs. search exhaust mainifold studs on fordtruckenthusiast.com. i looked around for someone to fix mine, i got quotes from 400 to 3000. they will usually break off flush in the head, and need to be extracted.
all except one of mine broke when being removed.
good luck

thanks for the ideas so far, yes I am aware of the manifold problem and have had both mine replaces all new bolts gaskets and the manifold was machined flat, so that wasnt it.

keep in mind like i said the ticking goes away, with the exhaust leak the ticking continued all the time especially under load.

Cant imagine but can the a/c pump make this sound?

i believe for the V10s, there were some complaints of noises comming from the Y pipe, sound like a tic or knock, it's not related to a leak, more so to do with the exhaust pulses and the natural frequency of the pipe.

There is a fix for it, but i can't remember what

just something else to look into
