I'm building my 96 XJ to be a 'Rubicon XJ' if they built one in 1996. So far I have a 3.5" lift (new packs) on 31s, and swapped out the dana 35 for a stronger 8.25. So it needs good road manners, but better traction than the 'barley adequate' stock LSD the dana 35 had.

Sadly the 8.25 I swapped in is a peg leg. It needs help. Looking for a cable/air/wiring free locker or "limited slip that works better than the factory type", I've looked around and found the Detroit (Eaton) TrueTrac limited slip and the Richmond Powertrax.

I'm split between...
Detroit TruTrac
*silent on the street (better than the Powertrax)
*supposedly 33" tires max (the worm gears are the weak link)
*no clutch material to wear out unlike other LSDs
*Not a real locker.

Richmond Powertrax
*very good on the street (for locker standards)
*how bad is "driveline rubberbanding" and such?
*will it break the axles?
*~$50 cheaper

This is just for out back. Too poor to care about the front axle at the moment. Someday I might find some axles from an OshKosh truck to put under there someday if the "Rubicon XJ" idea is 'too soft'.:finger:

The way I see it is this:

TrueTrac is the best LSD available.
It's a true carrier replacement which makes it stronger than the Power Trax.
Not a true locker, but damn close.
It will require more $$ for set up vs. the drop in locker.
Road manners are excellent with the LSD.
It will never wear out.
Lunch box lockers are a great value and easy to install but carrier strength becomes an issue.
The new lockers have been refined to greatly reduce shock loading.

If your trying to do it on the cheap with a moderate tire size in mind (33-35) i'd go with the lunch box locker.

If you are talking about the powertrax no-slip I have bought 2 before.
I am currently running an aussie. The no-slip is noticably smoother.
Although looking back I don't think it was worth it for how much more expensive it was.

If you actually plan on wheeling just get a lunchbox, no LSD is ever going to complete with a locker. After a few month of driving with it on the street you won't even know its there.

ive had a xj on 33's that i street drove as much as i ofroaded it and had a detroit trutrac in the rear, i loved it and it never gave me a single problem on or off road


and ill have to agree with the Yuppie edition!!!!!

any el cheapo lunchbox will be fine. detroit ez locker, lockright, aussie, spartan.
they are all pretty much a copy of each other, and work fairly well.

i doubt carrier strength will be an issue with 31's. i had a stock dana 30 carrier with an ez locker. ran 36's, 35's, and 33's till they were all bald. never had an issue.

OKOK get your undies out of a wad, geez lol.:finger: Nothing wrong with the YJs either. At least they don't use car parts like the TJs do (seriously TJ=dodge car interior bits, mostly minivan and dodge neon. Yuck!)

I'll go and take a sawzall to the whole thing so I have a jungle gym on wheels, front and rear rockwells with driveline brakes, and riding on 48 inch tires.

That would be fricken badass for sure, but expensive as hell :poke: and Jeep would never make anything like that from the factory.

Doesn't the mopar underground 'lower forty' not even have a lift? Fricken yuppies.:beerbang: lol

Like what, the radio? That's being pretty harsh given that ridiculous airbag steering column in your XJ, originally found in Chrysler cars and minivans.
AC controls and center stack, hollow turn signal stalk, stuff like that. When you work on cars every day you notice "hey it's the same damn part from vehicle x is on vehicle y". Aha, my shop-bitch days. :)

Looks like you have a XJ as well. Aha, the ugly-ass minivan steering wheel likely plagues you as well unless you have the earlier GM column. Hey, they (airbag XJs) are pretty dang similar to the dakota/ram column and steering wheel. Same light up thing near the ignition key, same "big ass airbag" 2 spoke wheel design (ram has round horn buttons though).

That'd be added later. Since when are our Jeep/4x4 builds EVER done?:woot: The stock axles can survive beatings (some guys swear on their built D35s) but I swapped in the 8.25 for a little extra strength since I'd rather not need to be pulled back to camp and towed home on a wheeling trip.

44s are on the "when I find some cheap" list (like a 258 crank, stuff like that), have had my eye out for quite a while. Sucks they were only made a couple years. The extra strength out front would be great as well since the D30 is known to bend if sunlight gets between the rubber and the trail. Hmmm... might have to do something like that to get an 'ok' from the lady. :beerbang:

For swaybar disos, I was thinking JKS quick discos... not sure if they make anything else for our XJs.
