Much more.Well. He won't be using that hand for awhile.
So smokeless powder is more powerful?
Alot, say it takes ~100 Grains of BP for a muzzle loader will get you ~1500 FPS.So smokeless powder is more powerful?
Thats my guess.Upon reading further info provided in the thread, this appears to be a bad case of user error. The rifle in question is in fact designed to be use with smokeless powder, but a much smaller load is needed.
As soon as I read the first post of that thread, thats exactly what I thought. I love shooting BP, but you HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL. More than once I have pulled the ball back out, to make sure I didnt put the powder in twice. A lot of people just want to shoot guns without getting to know them well enough to be safe.Thats my guess.
He used a prescribed BP loading with SP instead.
This was a bad idea from savage to begin with. They had to of known this would happen sooner or later. Hopefully they dont get sued out of existence. I love my savage.
I'm sure somewhere in the manual for that gun it clearly states something regarding this. It's the guy's fault and no one else's.Thats my guess.

I didn't think muzzleloaders had bolt handles? <Maybe I just am really unfamiliar with the type of rifle.
Its an inline. The bolt holds the cap onto the nipple. From link:

Not a bolt for a round, but lots of them have one to insert the primer. From link:
