my 03 focus started haveing a sparatic idle last week. now sometimes it wont idle at all, push in the clutch and it dies. i finaly got the check engine light to turn on on the damn thing and scaned it. the only thing that came up was idle too low and the code number. i had vato zone throw it in their computer and it said i needed a idle air control valve. my problem with that is it only does it now and then makeing me thing its a sensor. (the guy behind the counter also told me if i used a fuel injector cleaner more often that the iac wouldn't crap out like that. i looked at the guy and asked him if he realized what he just told me and he looked dumbfounded.....so i told him to get educated and that fuel doesn't even come in contact with the valve.....i turned around and walked out)

now for the questions

1. isn't the iac just a servo that takes a signal and opens the valve the required amount

2. what sends the signal too it......obviously the ecm but what sensor should i look at to be the culprit.

#1 your right. it has so many counts. its been a while since Ive dealt with one but it need to be looked at with a scan tool. and BTW the obdii system doesn't tell you what part it bad, the guy just fount the fault code related to the iac and told you it was bad, not always the case.

#2. there isn't one or two senors that tell the iac how much to open. the ecm takes feedback from just about all the senors to figure out what the iac count needs to be.

if i were you i would take out the iac and take a look at it.
they can be cleaned up. they stick a lot and get really dirty. while you are there and have the carb cleaner handy clean the throttle body. right where the butterfly valve seats in the throttle body. FYI if you do this it will be a bitch to start but just give it some fuel and it will burn all the carb cleaner quick.

:sonicjay::sonicjay::sonicjay::sonicjay::sonicjay::sonicjay:

autozone techs crack me up.

search the web for the TSB on this. no you do not need an IAC motor. you need to fix the water intrusion problem at the EGR solenoid and reset all the adaptives.

I think I would clean the TB and IAC valve first, very common for the TB to get carboned up and cause idle problems. The IAC sometimes will stick closed and cause a stalling problem, a quick test is to have someone just give it enough throttle to barely idle and then someone else tap on the IAC, if it was stuck it should open and return to normal idle.
