Okay, I am a little confused on this one.

Took in the Laredo for a transmission service with filter and had them do the transfer case too.

Figure since they were in there and the fluid was the same to go ahead (besides they can get the mud off my skid plate :tonka:)

I call to see if it is ready and get the price and he tells me it was a little more because they had to get transfer case fluid instead of ATF+4 for the transfer case?????

wjjeeps and my manual both say ATF+4 but they say they called the dealer and they said if it is brown and thicker then put the transfer case fluid in.

Three questions

Anyone else heard of this?
Will this hurt anything?
If yes I should I take this thing back and have them put the right stuff in?

whats transfer case fluid...

if you can get to the check hole, i'd go under and stick your finger in and see if it comes out red or not :tonka:

I'm assuming they may have put gear oil in your t-case

I'm guessing they put gear oil in it, try calling a different jeep dealer and ask them what is supposed to be in it. I'd guess if the manual says ATF+4 that's prolly what they should have used not gear oil. Old tranny and t-case fluid can be brown so color coming out isn't a good reference! Gear oil is much much thicker then tranny oil, but I'm not sure if it will hurt anything or not. I guess as long as they are kept separate it would prolly be ok, but if they transfer the oil between the 2 then your not ok!

The 247 uses it's own fluid that is tan in color (looks like and is about the same viscosity as engine oil), but the 242 uses ATF +4. I'd take it back and tell them to flush it out and put the ATF +4 back in it. I'm a tech at a jeep dealer in sw mich.

DESCRIPTION - TRANSFER CASE - NV242
Recommended lubricant for the NV242 transfer case is Mopar® ATF+4, Automatic Transmission Fluid.

DESCRIPTION - TRANSFER CASE - NV247
Mopar® Transfer Case Lubricant (P/N 05016796) is the only lubricant recommended for the NV247 transfer case.

I called the dealership today and he said the same thing.
Manual and computer says ATF+4.
He also said that he didn't know what the difference was or if it would hurt.

Just talked to the shop and he said he would change it out but mainains that what he took out was transfer case fluid.

Gonna have him change it out on Monday.
