So i've been serching all over the place, i know tom woods makes a kit that is the stock shaft adapted with a hack 'n tap.

I really can't afford the $800+ price tag right now though.

I know that Rubicon express made one but i don't see it anymore.

I just stumbled upon that the 231 has the same spline count as the 242. If this is true can i still use RE's hack 'n tap.
http://www.rubiconexpress.com/Products.aspx?Cn=328&Pn=1806&XnPath=320,321,328&Vid=282FEF2982293

Any advice would be great... need the sye to go up to 8 inches and Q78's

If you buy the 231, why hack & tap? There are a lot of other options out there for the 231 that wouldn't require the hack n tap.

on a 231 you can get a SYE for aroung $200 and get a XJ front driveshaft and use it as your rear driveshaft.

all in all.......around $250ish.

hes not talking about swapping in a 231 for the 242. What he is saying is they are both the same spline count and he wants to kno if a 231 hack n tap kit will fit the 242.

The expensive Tom Woods SYE is not a hack/tap. I have the real TW 242 SYE. It doesn't cost that much, there are just high core charges. If you have something else to drive, send your core to them ahead of time instead of fronting all the $ and waiting for the new shit to come first.

Or sell your XJ and buy mine. :tonka:

I understood him to be talking about installing a 231 H/T on a 242, but I was addressing his original comment about the Tom Woods 242 SYE being a H/T. There is a H/T kit for a 242, but its not the one with that price tag. That's the price for the real TW SYE before your core credit is applied. After you send your core back, you get like a $400 refund or something.

The output shafts on a 231 are totally different...except for the spline count on the outside of the shaft.

The RE hack and tap is crap. It works OK for the short term...but give it a couple months and you will be disappointed. Plus it does not strengthen the output much, because you still leave alot of output shaft hanging out there.

Tom Wood's SYE cuts all of the spines off the stock shaft and creates new splines deeper inside the tcase, and the new yoke gets sandwiched against the inner race of the tcase output shaft bearing...making it alot stronger.

Once you hack and tap your stock shaft Tom will no longer accept is as a core. I highly suggest you pony up the cash now if you want the stuff to last.

I would pop into the for sale section and buy the 231 with the tera 4:1 kit and the SYE for $500.

That thing is a STEAL.

I thought the Tom Woods kit was a hack and tap...thats why they want your core, so they can hack and tap it for sale in a new kit?

I bought the Tom Woods kit for my 242. It was $500 after the core refund. But you get a new rear driveshaft with their kit.

H/T kits are typically DIY's, but I guess he's offering them finished now since a lot of people have problems with them not long after they do it themselves. Your H/T kit was $500 because it came with a driveshaft.

In the case of the real SYE, Tom Woods wants your shaft back because they're going to shorten and respline it. I did not get a driveshaft since I already had Tom Woods shafts f/r from Frank's rollover. The actual 242 SYE is about $500 after core by itself.

The term "hack and tap" comes from the fact that the consumer buys the kit, uses a hacksaw to cut down the splines, then drills and taps the center of the output shaft to bolt on a flange.

Tom Wood does not cut down the splines...he completely removes them, and machines new splines on the shaft...which sit inside the transfer case. It's a real SYE kit, rather than a cheap way to bolt a flange to the output shaft.

Mark/Frank...thanks for the info. It was explained to me a little different of what TW was doing with the old shafts you sent him.

Ok, i may be able to pick up a 231 from a yj with the 21 spline input, changing this to a 23 spline should be as easy as swapping the input gear, correct?

Is there a difference between the two spline setups other then the input gear?
