So here is the deal....

I have a 1990 toyota pickup with a 22RE and when i picked it up from an auction it was running with a bad knocking noise... Well after taking off the valve cover i realized that the cam was all torn up and the head was not machinable..

so i bought a new head for the thing .. put in a new performance cam, hooked up everything, and the dang thing wont start!

Things i have checked for:

-It has spark
-its getting fuel
-I have TDC (top dead center)
-I have the rotor on number 1 cyilinder
-Its getting compression
-Im not 180 degrees off

IM AM LOST!

im not sure why it wont start so im open to any ideas!

seems pretty simple to me, the cam isn't right and the valves are opening at the right time

I really can't say for sure, but if you have spark, and fuel to the cylinders, then that means that the timing isn't right for the valves. I know you said you made sure everything was right, but check everything again cylinder by cylinder, spark and fuel. If all that is right then you know it's the cam not opening the intake and exhaust valves at the right times. My guess is that it's opening the exhaust valve on the intake stroke and the intake valve on the exhaust stroke

perform a cylinder leak down test on the head. starting with cyl 1 get it at EXACT top dead so both valves should be closed. then installed the tester and increase the air flow according to the leak down tester. then listen and see if air either comes out of the intake, exhaust, coolant over flow or spark plug hole. that should give you a pretty good starting point.

do a compression test on all cylinders, see if your O rings are junk and if the valves are seating all the way, it maybe that the new cam is keeping the exhaust valve open enough to let the air/fuel mixture out

When I put a bigger cam in my 22RE (cam was for a 22RE) it didn't start right away and so I bolted the exhaust manifold on since at first it wasn't because I was simply trying to make sure it ran. It fired right up after it had an exhaust on. I am not sure that should really make a difference but as spr chicken said the ECM is looking for certain conditions to run.

Just to check, shoot a few puffs of ether in it and see if its starts.

When I did my swap from a 22R to a 22RE, damn thing would not fire. Tried for 3 days. Shot it with ether and it fired, and ran fine for the next 3 years after that.

Sometimes if the rings aren't great, you get not so good compression on a cold/dry engine. Cranking puts gas in the cylinders and washes the walls as well. I've seen it on 3 differen engines of different makes/models, that we had to either use ether and/or squirt oil in the cylinders to get it to start.

cool i got it to start now it wont keep running.. has to be a fuel problom i think because i can keep it running of i keep shooting it with ether and then it dies out when i stop.... should i start with the fuel filter?

If it ran before the new head it should run after the head is installed. I would have changed the fuel filter when you had the head off so it was easier to get to but i doubt it is your problem. Just like wickedlowss said you need to have all the intake buttoned up and all sensors plugged in. check for any vacuum leaks and make sure all lines and wires to the intake and fuel rail are connected properly(fuel injector plugs in the correct order)

Are you sure it is getting enough fuel at the right pressure. I could get my 89 to run with starting fluid, ended up having to replace fuel pump after vehicle sat too long gas went bad and screwed up fuel pump twice.

i was thinking it might be that but i did a volume check and it seemed to be ok but there were a few bubles in the line that it was drawing so maybe it the fuel line on the pump?? and wouldnt it run as long as it is getting some fuel?

put a fuel pressure guage on the low pressure (return) side and crank it over. You might not have enough pressure to fire the injectors. btw did you replace the injector seals when you had the head off, and is the fuel pressure regulator ok.
