I have a standby generator currently. Curious if I were to add some panels and maybe 1 battery would the battery provide a seamless transition of power if I lose main power until it runs low and tells the gen to fire up.

My brother is a chemical engineer and very interested in hydrogen technology. He mentioned instead of a grid tie to use the excess power to make hydrogen and convert the generator to run off that

Ok, that sounds interesting. Using hydrogen to run the generator.

Yes, this is how Tesla Powerwalls, and my home powerwall made of Chevy Volt batteries works.

My wall charges during off-peak, and maintains during off peak. If the power goes out, my home transfers to the powerwall. I don't have a fancy "backup" generator that kicks on automatically, just a normal one with a tri-fuel carb. So I'd have to go out and start my generator myself to charge the battery if I needed more power.

JR,

You may want to check out DIY Powerwalls & Lithium Battery Modules & Components by Jehu Garcia

Jehu Garcia on the youtubes, seems like you can get that price down per kWh quite a bit yet. I'm still working out what I want to do at my cabin in Paradise. Just running off of a spare 12v deep cycle I have now to run the lights and a TV once in a while for a movie for the time being.

I thought all you really needed from Consumers was a specific meter, and then set the account up, was there more to it than that?

You have to apply for the program, pay 50 bucks, have an inspection, do a test... It's a bunch of shit, and harder if you're not just paying one of the big companies.

Took me a little over a month to jump through all the hoops.

I wouldn't say installing the system is a very easy task. Many people do not know how to do it right but want to save money on the labor. I think it is sometimes not the wisest decision. When I was installing an energy social network at my house, I was a bit afraid to do something in the wrong way, and decided to order installation as well. This saved me from a lot of headache. I think we should save our nerves and effort sometimes, not the money. Though I know that labor costs a lot in our country. Ayway, let us know if it is fine and how your solar systems are doing. And please share the total numbers so we could see if it is really saving
