Heh, I worked on that type of sensing in 1999. You can tell a lot about whats going on in the chamber based on spark energy & current flow. Once you strike and arc, you can use it like a wire to flow current through and tell you things.

Doesn't Saab hold the patent? (or is it "didn't" :sonicjay: )

Edit, timing is already managed on a per cyl basis in some vehicles, but it is just event-based off of a "window" that the knock sensor detects in.
