I would watch craigslist and on here etc for a quality used ride.

I picked up an LT80 for 600 bucks. I have seen yamaha 4zingers going for the 400-500 dollar range.

I would much rather buy a used quality bike over new chinese "stuff"

I bought my 6 year old daughter a tao tao 110 this past summer. At first had alot of problems with it idleing after being warmed up. Played with the carb and now it runs great. I was working in indiana over the summer and bought it while i was down there. But i think all the cheap ones are about the same. As long as you dont mind tinkering with them from now and again they are great starter quads.

I had a baja 90 when I was younger, and that thing was unstoppable. I beat the hell out of that thing and it still ran with no problems ever. The only things that sucked is it didn't have a backup starter if the battery died, and the resale value sucks on them.

My boys have a 2001 Arctic cat 90 and a 2001 suzuki lt80. Kymco, polaris and Arctic cat 90's are all the same model made by Kymco. Don't buy Chinese, sit tight and watch CL every day and something decent will pop up. When it does you have to jump immediately.

Both were picked up for about n $800 each, neither have cost me any real money in parts. I put new tires on the AC since he wanted them for Christmas. Both are mostly bulletproof and they ride them hard.

If you buy a quality used quad for $800 it will continue to be worth that. Buy Chinese and it's worth nothing after a year and you won't be able to find parts when you need them.

Watch for a used Japanese machine. Don't be afraid of an older machine. Most didn't change much since their inception ~'86.

You'll say to youself, or you're wife will say, "yea, but that's a 20-30 year old machine for $800!" That should reinforce the idea of the older Jap machine, instead of turning you off. The year and condition don't even matter, they are all worth 600-1000, and have held the same exact price for thirty years!

The China brands come and go every few years, and take the parts source with them. The only nice thing about the new China units is that some have a remote shut down, which may be handy. Otherwise, there is NOTHING advantageous about the new China jobs.

I would recommend a basket case name brand ( Japan) over a brand new Chinese piece of shit. You will be working on both of them, at least the basket case will be worth something when you are done..

Have you ever heard anyone bragging about how their 35 year old TaoTao still starta on the firat pull/kick/turn of the starter? Yea, me either. I hear that about Honda's though. The other Japs do to, the juat aren't as proud as Honda owners.

Ever hear anyone bragging about buying a TaoTao for $600, having three kids abusing it for eight years, then selling it for $600? Yea, me either. Honda folk do though.

I have a 1984 yamaha 4 zinger that was mine when I was 3 (I am now 32). I rode that thing daily. if there was do much snow my dad would plow me a track. rode it till I was 8-9 and my dad bought me a yamaha blaster. my sister then rode the 4 zinger till she graduated to my blaster. Then we passed it to cousins throughout the family (with the intention it came back to me).

My son was born 7 years ago. I got it back. it had new tires and a new seat. everything else still original. never been rebuilt (to this day).

my son rode the crap out of it (we have had and always lived on multiple acres to play). to this day I win bets with buddies and visitors when bsing about it. I ask how much they want to be it will start on the first pull.

They say no way. I win every time... my son has moved up to an LT80. it will probably go to my sisters kids next (they are 2 and 4).

none of the chinese stuff stays in business log enough to have that history.

here is my son on it last year up north

my dad bought it for 500 in 85. I bet I could get almost double that today.

I bought my son a redcat 50 online for $500 he ran it for four years and I sold it for $300 with some broken plastic and headlight, would have bought my daughter one but found a good deal on a Polaris outlaw 90 instead for $1000. The redcat was easier to start all I ever did with the redcat was oil changes and a cracked intake (my fault dropped the quad off the tailgate of my truck) which is a direct replacement for a yamaha. So far every spring the Polaris is a pain to start and coldblooded as it gets, the chain guard is broken do to low clearance and the brakes haven't worked good since day one, and the shifting linkage spline is stripped. I will fix all that and she will ride it a few more years Im guessing it will sell and I will loose more than the $200 I lost on the "chinese junk".

Truth be told people that rip on the "Chinese junk" rarely even owned one!!!
