I actually used Sylvan myself to pass college algebra when I was 19. No matter what, I just couldn't pass it after 3 tries. The added frustration wasn't helping on top of just not being able to grasp it.

Managed to pass it with a B after going there twice a week for about 8 weeks. Can't remember how much I paid, but it was worth it.

My son is just about finished with second grade, he is not having enough issues to be held back but still some issues. He has been thru multible surgeries. This has all effected how he us doing in school with speech.

What bugs me the most is they pull him from other subjects to work on reading.

We read every night with our son and he does well with reading too but, I guess it is more of a combined issue multible set backs with surgeries and trying all that the school wants us to try that is effecting him the most. He has gone though being tongue tired, tonsilis taken out to abnoids removed twice. He has also had tubes in his ears twice and now is under going allergy testing. So far he is allergic the dairy, wheat, soy, chicken and chocolate. Next he under goes molds and pollens.

This sucks he is only 8 and had to already deal with more crap then most. So with that being said we are just trying to get him back up to speed before the next school year starts.

As being a Preschool teacher I have talked to many different parents that have used different brands. Some parents have used Hooked on Phonics and Sylvan and got some achievement but not as fast as using My Baby Can Read.

Although My Baby Can Read is for ages 3months to 5years, some kids that are 10 still use the program because it is a little more easier for learning at a younger level then what Sylvan can give you.

Between the two that you listed the best achieved one that I have heard from is Hooked on Phonics. It has more fun and games while the kids are learning.
A Learning Child should be a happy child is my works mission statement and it seems to go a long way.

I would hesitate to take advice from this "teacher" until you have consulted with a teacher that can successfully complete the hooked on phonics program.

On a serious note, it could be more than just the time away from school that is stunting your child's learning. Allergic reactions themselves can retard the learning process, I'll shoot you a PM with a little more information.

Besides all that, my brother had a lot of success with Kumon.
