I have an idea that requires me to find the radius of a body panel in order to fabricate it. (rockers on my truck)

I cannot get at it with a square to determine the arc, nor do I think one of those fancy straight line pin things :finger: are going to tell me much.

Am I overlooking something simple to give me a radius or diameter of a body panel? I would guess that it is in the 4-6" radius region.

Maybe I'm just not thinking about the best way to get a semi accurate reading of the arc.

Take a pic of what you are doing. I may have a few Pipefitter tricks that could help.

Without seeing it you should be able to use a cloth tape measure like a seamstress would use. Mark and measure around the section of the radius. If you can then fit calipers or a compass in there and measure from mark to mark. With those two measurements you should be able to figure out the radius. If you can't get it from there I can draw you a pic and write an equation. Let me know!

I want to match a piece of pipe cut lengthwise to replace my rocker panels on the side of my 03 silverado crew cab. I want to take a piece of angle iron, and weld the ~90° section of pipe to the angle to replace the old and look stock, I then want to take a piece of DOM or other pipe and make side steps (kind of like they do on the Jeeps).

Then have the bottom lip and steps bedlined when I do the box this summer.



I honestly didn't think about cardboard/cardstock and scissors.


Trying to figure out what size pipe I need to cut up lengthwise to achieve the same radius.

When It would all be done, nobody would notice that it is now made with thicker cross section steel and potentially reinforced to the frame. Aside from the side steps/protection welded to it.
