I'm looking to buy a new 5.1 or 6.1 speaker system for my basement. Anyone have any recommendation on a good quality brand that is decently priced? (I.E. Polk, JBL, Bose etc)

Thanks

I have Sony and I'm happy with it. I bought it used at pawnshop for $90 that had been miss priced because it didn't have a lot of things on the back, HDMI removes all the uselss inmputs and outputs :teehee: It was should have been a little over $200

Whatever you do make sure it has HDMI for future upgrades.

I got a Bose acoustmass 10 at a refurb store 10 years ago half price. What's the room like its going in? If the room is crap for audio reflection a bose would be a good choice.

I have a Sony receiver currently that accepts HDMI and love it. I'm actually just looking for a good speaker package (Rears, Center, Fronts and Sub).

The room is rectangular and I insulated the walls and ceiling. The room sould have decent sound reflection I would think.

I picked one of these up when circuit city in auburn hills closed their doors. (pretty sure it was that one, but I'd have to check to swear an oath to it)

for something silly like $165 out the door. considering I have a samsung LCD TV, I couldn't be happier with the decision to use matched components.

for a home theatre on the budget in a fairly small space it is more than adequate, and it included the integrated dvd/cd/amp/sub as depicted - Saving Private Ryan - is the barometer I used to test it, and upconverted to 1080, with the sound through it (and not even using the rears) it was awesome especially considering the price.

additional bonus, I still haven't run the rear speaker wires cause they make an optional wireless unit (That admitedly gets mixed reviews) but I may try it out anyway.

Bose really makes some incredible stuff for off the shelf - I could just never justify the price even at 1/2 price.

My father in law always goes acoustamass - he also has two of their wave radios at the 'cottage' - one sits in the garage, the other sits atop a specially made marble ledge, in their marble encrusted kitchen.

i'm kinda bummed. I have a refurbed sony d945 command center that has started acting weird lately. It simply stops outputing audio at random. some days it does it and others it goes all day without a hiccup. It's good and clean inside and its not heat related. I haven't figured out what's causing it to cutout let alone how to get it to come back. sometimes changing output modes works and sometimes nothing. Thinking about letting a friend take a crack at it if he has time. Don't know anyone else capable of an attempt.

If you're going the way of the HTIB, there is NO other choice then the HTS6100 from Onkyo. 1080 upconverting, powered sub, REAL 7.1. Onkyo FTW.

US appliance is the cheapest place for onkyo stuff. They don't list onkyo pricing on their site because they're not allowed to. I was just there, $549 for the package.

If you don't care about upconverting and are fine with pass through, check out the 5100. $399. And you can put your cheap onkyo setup against the much more expensive systems.

If I didn't already have my Onkyo / Klipsch setup, I would buy that 6100 series setup.

CC, Thanks for the info. One question though. Where does the extra speaker go for the 7.1 setup vs 6.1?

do NOT buy bose, and RUN AWAY from anybody who tells you to buy them. They're like a dyson, average product, awesome advertising. also stay away from low end yamaha and pioneer receivers.

heh, CC has a thing against Dyson :)

dyson has a good idea. shamefully executed though, but definately advertised and priced to the stars.

Don't need top of the line just looking for a good sounding speaker package(5.1/6.1) to hook up to my Sony receiver. It'll probably end up being are main living area to hang out with the kids.

Just speakers?

quintet III

but if you have a sony receiver, you might be better off going to wal mart and buying a cheap speaker setup, as the speakers sound only as good as the receiver.
Ouch!......:sonicjay: That's why I'm debating on looking at that Onkyo setup you posted.

My new setup in my basement might do you some good. I have a similar onkyo receiver (onkyo 806) and four onkyo rears with KEF's up front and an active klipsch 12" sub.

That system without the KEF's on will give you a pretty close sound to what you would experience with that 6100 setup, if you want to listen to it.
