Last night my sony vaio started running kinda hot and after I closed it and came back to it the screen is about half the size it should be with green lines running down the whole thing and I can barely read anything on the screen.

wtf happened :(

its about three years old, i want to get somewhat of an idea before i take it to the idiots at best buy.

Rule 1: Never go to the f*cktards at BestBuy's GeekSquad. You called them idiots for a reason, that is because they are. When a friend of mine asked them what was wrong with her computer they said "It has a cold," but couldn't proceed to fix it. :miff:

Did you try letting it cool off and restarting it? Sometimes laptop monitors do that occasionally. Usually a restart or turn the screen off a once or twice will clear it up.

I let it sit overnight with no improvements and restarted it a few times yesterday.

I think I know of somebody local I could take it too, that would make me way happier than taking it to best buy, I used to because of the warranty, but that went byebye.

I am 99.9% positive your integrated graphics card just died.

i've had the exact same thing happen on 2 laptops.

It is going to be cheaper to buy a new laptop than get that one fixed (last time i looked around $600 to fix a burnt out graphics chip)

You can have a better computer from office depot for that price.

I can't i've thrown those laptops out :tonka:

I was told it's not exactly the graphics card just dieing, it is the card/ chip overheating and destroying itself.

On my last one that did that fist i got blue lines across the whole screen for a while, then it went from it's resolution (1440x900) and would only display at 1024x768. Then it got green lines across the whole thing.

The image is distorted because once the chip gets damaged enough windows doesn't know what it is anymore and it default to video safe mode and no longer loads the drivers for the card, it just loads a generic video driver.
