Recently picked up a serial to USB connector with the drivers to use it, and have been trying to get my laptop to see the GPS Unit. Anyone use the older GPS units with their laptop? If so did you have any problems using them?

I used my old etrex legend with my old laptop that had some garmin mapping software on it. It essentially turned the GPS unit into an antenna for the computer. IIRC you needed the software for the computer to "find" the device though.

The program I used was called MapSource IIRC.

It was a neat program, because it had all of the roads in the US, and you could plot a route in the computer, then download it into the GPS. Though, the GPS could only hold a few counties worth of maps, so plotting a cross country drive was hard. (this was years before turn by turn)
