Hate to say it, but that part of your statement may be your downfall. Legally, you have no way of proving he owes you money. If you do something stupid, you may end up on the wrong side.

You could try to take him to small claims court, but not sure how you can prove he actually owes you the money.

Do a search, mich.gov and look his name up and see if he has anything out standing as far as the courts, police, bad checks whatever you can find.
I did the same to a guy that did not pay me then wrote me two bounced checks and found he was on probation for.... you got it check fraud. My wife called the probation officer, the judge and guess what? I got paid ever dime he owed me. Be creative in trying to get your money but keep it legal. Good luck and hope you get all your money plus more for your troubles.
