How much torque do you put on the lock ring .... it tightens up against the pre-load ring..

I have seen 150-ftlbs.

I did this to the driver side, spins great, no problems.
However I did this to the passanger side and I striped the threads on the spindle :( Good thing for a spare axle laying on the side of the house.

I could only get it tight to about 50-ftlbs. If i go anymore I can't turn the damn thing. Pre-load is correct. I torque to 50-ftlbs. than back off 1/4 turn.
Bearings look good to.

i have actually seen it go from 50-200 by some people.... I can't imagine doing 200!!! 150 was a biznitch to do! I will just leave it 50 on the passanger side, 150 on the driver side. haha

or should i do them both at 50??? I don't want bearing failure

I generally tighten to pretty tight with a 1/2" drive ratchet and then back it off.

Always seems to work well probally ends up between 50 and 100 ft/lbs

For stuff like that, which you may need to fix on the trail, i always try to figure out not the numerical amount, but what it feels like with the tool for tightness

Both at 50. The high numbers you are thinking of are for unit bearings.

50 then back off quarter turn is correct.

Service manual says the inner nut goes to 50 foot pounds while rotating the hub. Then back it of, then to a final of 35 foot pounds.

The outer nut goes to 50 foot pounds.

Many people/manufacturers do it other ways. Toyota 8"s require you to check rotational drag with a scale, which IMHO is a better way.

hot damn than i better check on the other side to make sure its not to tight!

yes doing it by drag would be nice, but for the mor than average person, we don't have the stuff to do it.

It usually just a spring scale.
