so this is what we are doing.

our isolation started a week to ten days before you guys. I'm no oracle, it just worked out that way. we have had contact with six (I counted) since this started.

We started the grocery delivery too. order on line, two hour later a person brings it to you. Now it takes three days.

I have a buddy in Idaho.

Otis moved semi off grid when he retired. He has a beautiful place overlooking the Payette River. No internet and local TV. he goes to town every month for groceries. Thats the setup. when this started I called him, Otis said, and I quote "This is the backwoods of Idaho, we dont do that here".

He now says all the summer homes on the way to town, that are normally vacant, had two to five cars in the driveways. There are people EVERYWHERE! When he got to the market, the shelves were bare. The truck comes in on wednesday night after closing, by thursday noon they were cleaned out.

He says he will try McCall or Boise if he cannot stock up at the store this week.

he is the only one in my small circle I know in dire straights. I amazoned him a case of progresso soup and three boxes of crackers. who knows when that will get there.

and that's how this shit spread to places that don't have international traffic. Douchebags from hot zones up and left the first time someone said "stay put"

Yep. 100%
Gretchen....

Pissed me off when Gretchen...in her 1st news conference the day after announcing the "stay at home order" said it was "OK to travel up north to your cabin"

I was like WTF! How is that part of the stay at home order? Keep your asses home. I don't think she would repeat that now.

Our shelves are pretty thin here too at the grocery store....
last week in California it was reported that dregs dressed in tyvec coveralls, goggles and face masks were going door to door. If you answered, they bum rush you and rob you.

Yesterday Mason county said someone dressed in black with black surgical masks were going around posing as census takers. They are not.
We have received complaints of subjects going door to door in Mason County claiming to be from the U.S. Census Bureau. Two subjects were wearing black masks over their mouths and latex gloves. The US Census Bureau has NOT begun their door to door campaign. If you have suspicious subjects showing up claiming to be from the Census Bureau please call 911 and obtain as much information of them and their vehicle.

Im surprised there has not been more of this.
just saying...

As people's savings and stores run out it's just logical that lawlessness rises

Its called a "raiding party", people will get desperate. "prepare to repel boarders!"

Since about a month or so ago, we have kept all doors and windows locked at all times, home or not.

Also have a gun within reaching distance of all entrances. Handgun and SBS. Luckily my grandpa, living with us, doesn't give a fuck, and keeps his little .380 on him at all times. so even when we're not home, someone is home on watch.

Call it what you will, but i'd rather be prepared and at least have a chance rather than some hill-jack asswad decide to raid the place cause he's got go boom stick
I’m prepared. :d:
Me too. :d:

I'm normally very good about keeping things locked, always have been. I'm even more strict now. I'm prepared, but unfortunately can't leave firearms out and accessible with 2 little ones running around. It's still as quick access as it gets while being safe though. And my WFH station is overlooking the driveway and the only reasonable access to the house. I'd say the likelihood of anyone coming to this neck of the woods to rob supplies is pretty damn low, but I'll go with Murphy's Law and be ready just in case.
Growth rate went up 5% today. Any one day isn't really indicative of any lasting trend but another 75 deaths today. With New York/New Jersey being really the same city it honestly counts as one in my eyes, that puts us at number two in the country.

wikipedia has a daily chart, shows we are still growing exponentially in Michigan. That could be testing finding cases.

Depending on the model you look at we're no going to hit the peak of this thing for another week or two. Unfortunately none of the states have hit a peak yet so we can't even get a predictive time line.

Is shutting the whole country down such a great idea? As a society we don't shut everything down for cold a flu season and 60,000 people died from that last year alone.
This is a more contagious than the flu I get that but is it ok to destroy an economy over it? Which would affect millions in so many ways.

What part of "not the flu" do you still not understand. Put 10 family members in a room and pick the 1 or 2 that die. When the hospitals are overwhelmed, death numbers spike to over 10% because the people that have it that could recover can't get treatment. How can you be this far into where we are as a society and still not comprehend that? If it gets to that point and Doctors/nurses stop showing up because it's a lost cause, then what does that % spike to? Use your head man.

Cripple the economy or kill millions? What would be a lesser evil?

Its pretty interesting how the flu comparisons are still being used, even with months of explanations on how it's nothing like the flu. We know the flu, we don't know COVID-19, that's the difference.

You're not contagious with the flu for 14 days before you even show symptoms.
THIS IS NOT THE FLU!

* Hospitals are about at capacity - parking structures and convention centers are being converted for the overflow.
* Morgues are about at capacity
* First responders are doing limited CPR and if a person is pronounced deceased at the scene, they are not even being transported to ER where in the past there was still hope of recovery. In our township, wherever possible, only 1 first responder is allowed with the patient at a time.

Thankfully the death rates appear to be tracking a little lower than the models but still up there.

While I too have used the Flu as a comparison, @wave_crusher is spot on. We don't know COVID-19. Right now the numbers are lower than the flu but the models show it projects to be way higher.

I'm hoping that the current restrictions are going to be good enough. The government (both state and fed) are responding with tax and unemployment and incentive checks. Let's hope that is enough to get us thru this economically. But at some point America needs to get back to work or there will be a financial melt down. At that time, depression and suicide may start becoming the next crisis wave.

^both spot on. A couple additions:

Those flu numbers are with millions getting a vaccine, which even if not 100% effective, it lowers to frequency and severity of infection. And it's a known virus, we know how to deal with and treat it in the extreme cases and STILL have 60k+ die a year. We don't have ANY of that for this, the rate of infection is 2.5x higher IIRC, and the fatality rate is close to 10x higher even before hospitals are overwhelmed.

This 100k-240k death projection that we're hearing that probably doesn't sound THAT bad to some people? Yeah, that's with these "extreme"(not enough IMO) measures that we're taking. Without it would EASILY be well into the millions. 1.5 million deaths in the US would be 25x worse than the flu, and it could very, very easily surpass that.

And what happens to the economy when 20% of the population is infected? You think those who haven't caught it or have underlying conditions are gonna go to work and risk catching it and dying in triage at a completely overwhelmed hospital? Face it, this is going to hurt the economy bad no matter what we do. By trying to shut this down early(not early enough unfortunately) we lower the death toll and the timeframe the economy suffers. Do nothing, or even too little, and the death toll skyrockets, and what make look like less economic impact early just turns into worse problems later, and likely for much longer.

Not a chance. There is no way many small businesses can keep paying their employees all summer so they can get the 'loan' forgiven, especially when it is likely months before they get that money. Most that I know likely only have a month or two of payroll on hand for all employees and they are inventory heavy for the upcoming season. If they can't have production/application then that dries up too. We are going to see a LOT of small companies belly up, our local downtown's and community people for sure. It's going to wreck everything for a long while.

Heck Airlift already folded, they blame Covid-19, but they likely were already in trouble with the speed at which it happened.
Whitmer just spoke. She is advocating wearing a mask if you must go out in public.
