what i would do in the simplest way is to build a big sandbox square out of 4x4's 20 ft by 20 ft stacked 2 pieces high and fill it in with play sand. level it out and your done. i did that at my moms house in her backyard that has a slight downhill grade to it. worked great for my little brothers pool.

Being a pool installer for many years I would have to say you never add to level, you always take away so start digging.

Heres a tip: Use a level...start at the high side and dig out till level with the low side. If there are dips just fill them in.

Ohh and dont use a 4 or 6 ft level those are so inaccurate....go to the hardware store and get yourself a torpedo level with one of those fancy lazers.

actually what we did at my grandparents house was rototill the area where the pool was gonna sit, and then leveled it out with one of those roof rakes (shovel used for removing snow from a roof). Turned out really good, and since the rototiller my grandparents have is older, it gave me a good work out while I was using it.
