2004 WJ, 4.7L

Used to blow cold air until recently started blowing just cool air. Seems to be colder at dawn/dusk but I think its because its not competing with hot interior. I added two cans of R134a (24 oz total), and no change, but its still colder than no A/C at all.

When I shut the engine off whille A/C is on, I hear a whizzing sound that winds down over 2 seconds similar to a baseball card in a bicycle wheel.

The belt never squeals.

This is my wife's Jeep (WJ) and my balls are getting busted in this hot weather. Do the compressor pumps have clutches that go out? How do I diagnose this on a budget?

blockage in the system or poor air flow through the condensor or evaporator...wash through the condensor and evaporator (if you can get to it, which is doubtful) and check it again...if the problem still exists (probably will), there is a blockage in the lines somewhere, probably the orifice tube...

may be the beginning of the black death syndrom

That system only holds 24 oz. It probably was only down maybe 8-16 oz (if it was somewhat working) and now it is probably overcharged. These newer systems are alot smaller than they used to be and are much more sensitive to getting the correct amount of freon in them. You really should take to someone that can recover the freon out and recharge it with the correct amt. We see this all the time at the shop.

1.5 lbs? that is a small system

I recharched a system last week with 4.8 lbs :sonicjay:


X2 on taking it in someplace that can hook guages to it, at the very least....hi and low side pressures will tell what is actually going on

black death is a term used to describe when the teflon lining in the compressor starts to break loose, mixes with the oil in the system, and creates blockages in the system with a black goo. it starts out kind of slowly, you will lose cooling capacity, and the high side lines will get much hotter then they should
