my (wifeys) 99 jeep grand cherokee's tcase is making a weird almost like a buzzing sound and im not too sure what could be causing it. it has the auto-trac option and someone told me that the clutches were just out of it (it dont work) and thats what was making the noise and to not worry about it. but im a little more leary on the subject. if this case is bad is there one i can put back in it without the auto trac option? its really not the greatest of rides and isnt worth a $2000 new case imho. it really sounds like a wheel bearing is bad (similar noise) but i know its in the tcase because i jacked the wheels up and spun the driveshaft and it was making a slight clicking noise in the case.

any ideas what to expect if i pull it out?

thanks

The nylon bushings on the ends of the shift forks get brittle and brake or wear out, then allow the shift fork to wear out. Pretty soon, when there isn't enough meet left on it to hold the gear in place, it's starts buzzing. If it starts popping on ya, then it's let the chain stretch out.
