We went to charge the A/C on the GC... the compressor was not kicking on. So according the the instruction I have im supposed to empty half the can we have in.. so I did that....

Now the compressor kicks on but only until the pressure is about 10 then off again for about 10 sec.

What am I doing wrong?

This is my first attempt at recharging A/C.

Nothing, that's normal. You need to add more.

Problem is that the system was basically empty before you started doing this (this is why the compressor didn't come on), so why was it empty? Without finding the leak, it will just stop working again.

I'm sure you knew that much though ... if it was empty that system will take more than that to fill it to the proper level.

Ok, however it has what was considered to be the right pressure for the ambient temp when the compressor isnt running.

If i put more in wont I be over charging?

This is what im using

Are you using gauges? What's the pressures when the compressor kicks on and what are they when it kicks off?

Thanks for the input guys... got it figured out.. it kept kicking off due to low pressure switch so every time it kicked on i hit the valve, it eventually started staying on. We got a couple more cans. It is now blowing cold air again. Last time we did it (professionally) it lasted the season and thats good enough for us :) Too old to sink to much cash into it.
