what do you have? 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton 1 ton? what are you going to do to the truck?? need more info.

the axles between trucks are pretty much a bolt swap job. not sure about the drive shafts, never seen if they fit or not. but the suspension is the same. I know on a 94 there was 2 different widths of leaf springs. so might watch out for that. Not sure if the 97's had that set up also.

swapping in a 6 isn't going to reduce the sag from the weight... hes going to need springs for that... then its going to be easy to over load and BAM bent frame... you need a bigger truck if you dont feel comfortable hauling the trailer with what you have.

i really doubt that the frame would bend from using 3/4ton springs, if that frame bends theres bigger issues to worry about.

id upgrade to 3/4ton springs and axles if your happy with the truck as it is. there cheap and work great. id put helper bags on your stock rear springs that way you still have a decent unladed ride. as for the front, just throw in a set of diesel coils and theres lift and no sag. (i have diesel coils if your intrested)

idk about dodges but i know the older f series fords the 1/2 ton used c channel frames an the 3/4 ton and 1 ton used boxed frames.

id say use a airbag load leveling setup. but a 25ft gooseneck seems liek a pretty big trailer for a 1/2 ton.

throw some 60s like everyone said and some 2500 or 3500 springs. the SPRINGS will not bend the frame but maybe treating it like something other then a 1500 will. as for the widths i believe the only difference is the 2500 and 3500 axles have 3 inch spring perches and the 1500 only has 2.5 but not for sure. heard that once.

that 1500 should have the corp 8.75 that is supposed to be as strong as the 60 I wouldn't worry about that.
not even close. the 8 3/4 was last used in 79ish and NEVER EVER in the 2nd gen trucks. please get your facts right befor posting in the tech section. the axles in a 2nd gen 1500 are front dana 44 and rear chrysler 9.25. the 9.25 has been in the ram line since the mid 70s. again do your research befor posting.

Didnt some of the 3/4 tons come with 2.5" springs. I though I have ran in to them before. I could be wrong though. I do know when I have bought springs for the 1/2 ton there was the option for the 3" wide ones.

i wouldnt be worried about the rear axle. They have thoes in 3/4 ton trucks behind the deisle.

I might have 3/4 springs laying around.. Ill have to dig though my parts truck if your intrested. but I agree with the guys, you just need a bigger truck.

I *believe* that the difference is in the light duty 3/4 ton vs heavy duty. When thay had a light duty 3/4 ton is was with the 9.25 and a 44. The light duty 3/4 ton was only an option at the start of the 2nd gens, up to 97 I think, but it could be a year or to later, or a year earlier.

No, the V10 or diesel had a 70 or 80 rear. The difference was the autos had a 70, and the stick/dually had the 80.

I would just go out and look for a 3/4 2nd gen, then you would have nothing to worry about. I see about 10 mpg in my v10 and that is loaded or unloaded. The only thing I wish is that I had the stick vs. the auto. In the 2nd gens you could not get a 1 ton in a non-dually, so that is why you see so many 3/4 rolling around.
