I just bought a 69 Jeepster Commando w/ Buick v-6/400th ect. I will, in the future, be installing a 500ci Caddy. I would like to do an axle swap right now and be done with it. I prefer GM axles just because. Should I narrow a 14bsf/D44 or would corporate stuff be good enough? Is there a bolt in Dana pair that works? I'm lookin' for the best bang for the buck and I have lots of axles near me and lots of tradin' material if I don't. I'd like to stay within reason on width.Limited wheelin' mostly utility...I'v already fabricated a boom in the back. I've searched here already and didn't get much on Jeepsters.....
Thanks in advance!

There is nothing "bolt-in" that will handle a motor with 400hp and over 500 lb/ft stock. The best bolt-on you can do is a late CJ D30 front with discs and a D44 rear.

Forget the D44 or 10b/14bSF. Sell them to a 1/2-ton Chevy owner. You're looking at a D60/14b combo or a D60/14bFF (or a 35-spline D60, D70, or expensive 9" rear).

Personally, I'd skip the Caddy and bolt-in a Buick V8 for the intended useage you described.

to be honest, my rig only has 25k miles on it so I'm not THAT likely to be dropping the Caddy in very soon. I have a D44 rear now, D30 CJ frt is the same width as my S27 now? I don't have a CJ sitting here to measure. Can I buy good enough parts to beef the D30? I am actually more likely to add a lil boost to the Dauntless before I do any engine change. I have been collecting/re-building turbos for a while now so I gotta use 'em somewhere....

a v8 wont fit without cutting the friont cross member up to clear the pully, you loose the radiator shroud/mount and will have to mount the radiator right behind the grill and use an electric fan. the trans will bolt to the engine, but the t-case wont hold up to that kind of hp.

Personally, I'd keep the V6, put in a sm465 on a modified buick bell to gain back the loss in Hp from the automatic, run one piece axle shafts in the rear and swap in a CJ D30 with disks as was mentioned befor.

You end up with a lighter rig overall, less fab time and a granny low. The Buick 225 V6 has a great power to weight ratio, if it runs well, just run with it.

If you need parts let me know, I have ALOT of Jeepster Commando parts.
