Hello, back again with a question. Just got my new treadwright mud terrain tires, bout they wont due me no good without my 4x4 engaging. My truck has floor shift, but not locking hubs. I thought that maybe it was just the actuator, which it still possible could be, because i went to the junkyard and pull out a different one. I checked the fuse, and that tested good. The floor shift doesn't even light-up. Before, it wouldn't engage the front tires, but when put into low, i could fell the back end engage. Just wondering if anyone had similar problems, and what was the problem. As of right now, i shift it into low or high, and don't fell anything, even after i let it sit.

+2 on the Posi-lock. I have a friend that has the perma-lock in his but since it's locked all the time, his mileage tanks. He would adjust the lock rod in the summer to unlock it, but without climbing under and readjusting, there is no 4x4. Pain if you're in a hurry.

since everyone here is against fixing it correctly I'll try anyway.

as is the circuit for the 4x4 light comes on when the axle locks in. there's a switch that has to shift with the actuator. if your not seeing the light then the actuator isn't moving anything that or the circuit is dead and not moving the actuator.
I would test to see if you have 12 volts at the actuator. if you do then a new one should do the trick.
most people don't know the actuator is a heated gas charged cylinder. that's why they take a second or two to engage. they go bad because the gas leaks out or the heating element goes bad.

thanks Yetti for the info. I know how the actuator worked, i was just wondering if someone could tell me how to test if its working? You said see if it 12v are going to it, but how to i come to do that? As far as the link i posted went, that is priced at about $200, and a new actuator at about $125 or so. So i was asking if it was the actuator, would it be more benefical to invest in the posi-lok, so i didnt have to wait for the gas to heat up and engage my 4wd.

take it out and apply 12 volts to it if its good it will extend out a 3/4 to a inch with in 30 secs but if the light on the shifter does not come on look at the swicth on the t case its on the right side on top of shifter rod

The biggest benefit of a Posi-lok is you will never experience this problem again...actuator problems are all to common whether it be because it is too cold out, they get wet, fuse blows what ever the reason may be with a Posi-Lok you know your front axle will engage and you will not be stuck in the middle of a blizzard with no 4x4!

alright i got under the truck today and found out..

1. Actuator piston doesn't expand. (picture taken, while truck running in neutral in 4hi

Is this the tcase switch or w.e you guys were talking about..

Since the actuator isn't moving, would you suggest bad actuator, or do you suspect the switch is bad since the 4x4 lights are coming on? Is there a way to test the switch?

Check to see if actuator is getting voltage. Your 4x4 lights don't work because the actuator acts like a proximity switch and sends a signal back that the actuator has been made...why it is not being made is either bad actuator or T case switch, if you have voltage to the actuator then the actuator is bad, if not then the T case switch is bad or there is a problem in the wire harness.
It really is that simple :poke:
