I'm having some electrical issues with my swap.

My ignition does nothing when I turn the key :(

I was thinking if my problem is the engine harness. I used the one out of donor jeep, the 360 engine harness and hooked that up to the jeep. Should I have used the one that was on my jeep (258) instead?

I can crank the engine directly from battery, but the ignition does nothing.

was your original jeep an automatic ? could be the neutral safety switch. If its the harness I am thinking from the donor it worked in the donor. If it was originally an auto then the starter solenoids are differant on the two also..

Well, let's see, this is from your donor :) so the 360 had a t176 behind it and my 258 had an auto which is now hooked to the 360.
I also moved the starter solenoid that was on the 360 manual to the auto. I guess I need a different one then? One for automatic trans?

I did this in mine. Mine did the same thing when I first got it in. I ended up taking the wires out of the loom and making sure they all went to the right places according to the wiring diagram. It was a few different things. If it won't crank, check to see if you have power to the correct terminals on the relay, I had mine backwards. For ignition, the ignition box should be the same for both engines, check grounds and your neutral safety switch for the automatic. If you still need help and have beer, I'm in Brighton and may be able to come give you a hand this weekend.

You need to drive up here and do this to mine then :)

I guess I'll have to start checking them all, it's the one thing I hate the most.

When I did the swap on my CJ, I didn't have to do anything to the harness. I put in the V8 and started it up. The harness was practically the same, just the oil and temp sensors were in different locations. The ignition box is the same on both the 6 and 8's so there should not be any issues there.

But did you use the harness from the 360, or did you reuse the one that was on the jeep already? I'm thinking that some of the connections could be different?

The 'auto' starter solenoids have a neutral safety wire that grounds it from the neutral safety switch.. sounds like it is a neutral safety issue being that the jeep was originally an auto and the new engine harness is a manual.. the easiest thing to do would be too take apart the original 6 engine harness and trace the solenoid wires to thefirewall junction box and compare them.

Also double check to make sure it is going all the way into park..hold the key to crank position and move shift lever from park to neutral and if it cranks at all it is a linkage adjustment..

To locate your neutral safety switch, go here. http://www.offroaders.com/tech/Jeep-Wiring-Diagrams-1979.htm
There's a wiring diagram and the location of where its at.
1. look at the wiring diagram and go to section C-8 This will give you an idea of where to look under the dash of your jeep.
2.If you dont have the clip to make the connection, splice the blue and red wires to twist them together to complete the circuit.
If thats not the problem, it could be that you dont have all your ground wires hooked up under the hood. Motor should have a ground wire to the frame and fire wall. The wire harness under the hood has a ground wire as well and could be the problem if not hooked up. Turn the igntn to on and see if you have any current to the coil. Also make sure the connections are cleaned up on the starter.
Post what you find, thx.

The pin map on the firewall harness is probably different for the FSJ even though the firewall socket shape is the same. That's why Shawn's CJ engine harness worked.

Get a CJ wiring diagram and re-pin the connectors in the firewall socket.

I tried to follow the wiring diagram today and found out it's all hacked up...looks like it's modified for a different distributor. Instead of 3(4?) wires going into the stock dist., this one has only one wire going in (could this be a gm dist?). Ignition module is different as well and wired differently.

Another thing I noticed is that the ignition coil got really hot...does this mean there is a short somewhere?
