im trying to help out a friend , hes got a 2003 cavalier 2.2liter auto , his problem is if hes driving the car at slow speeds it wants to stall out but with the a/c on it stalls ( starts right back up ) it has stalled a few times without the a/c on but stalls everytime with the air on ... he did have a check engine light but it was a cyl mis fire ........ any ideas ?

idle air control motor probably carboned up and sticking. try removing it and cleaning it with some carb cleaner and a old tooth brush

fuel filter could cause it but thats probably not the cause of your issue. a clogged cat is only a symptom of other problems.

I would second the idle air control or whatever serves as the throttle position sensor on that thing. Sounds as though its not getting enough fuel when placed under load (turning on ac) and low speeds. Could be a fuel filter or pump as well but I'd look at the first two.

Take it to autozone or someplace and see if its throwing a code first.

find and fix the misfire the stalling might go away. a 4cyl running on 3 will have trouble idling.

its a mis fire on all cyls , so im guessing its throwing the code when the cars about to die and is stumbling all over at low idle , im leaning twards the iac sensor or vac leak
