2 weeks notice life lesson

So here's a lesson I learned this week.

Until you've collected a check, you're not hired.

A company reached out to me on Indeed, asked if I'd talk, I responded yes, they set up a phone interview that day.

All was well, went in for an in person and tour in two days, they made an offer that day, I accepted, filled out my background screen stuff, I9 stuff, etc etc.

Wait about 3 days, they send over a formal offer letter with a startdate, and a link to log into their onboarding software and set up payroll, etc etc.

I give my two weeks notice, work my final two weeks, have a little party on my last day, walk out at 1 pm to a giggling HR bimbo who thinks it's hilarious she get's to break the news that my background check hasn't cleared and my start date will be moved back.

How far back? She doesn't know. Is there anything I can do to help? She doesn't know. What company or referrence are they waiting on? She doesn't know.

Good times lol.

Fortunately, I can miss some paychecks, but good night Irene is this some bullshit.

I would be talking to the person who wants me to work for them. YOU guys gave me an offer. YOU better talk to HR and get me started or I'm moving on. IMHO, if you are working for such a large company that someone can't pull strings AFTER THEY CONTACTED YOU then it's not a long term employer for you.

I worked for a company that was part of ITW based out of Chicago. Long story short, they promoted me to a unique position (here in SE MI) and I wanted a raise. OH NOES, HR in Shitcago needs to approve it and they won't because then EVERYONE needs a review. Wait, what? I'm the only one you promoted but you can't review my pay individually? See ya! I turned in my notice that day.

If I can't get to the horse's mouth, I don't want to work there.

I was hired by the plant manager, I reached out to him and the head HR person who onboarded me yesterday at noon and received no type of reply or acknowledgement.

So I've answered another inquiry and have another interview tomorrow at 3, because I feel the same way.

If you can't get your poop in a group to hire at a high level, it's unlikely you're going to succeed at the macro level, and I think I'm good on the whole deal.

I do wonder how many positions are out there going unfilled because the ball get's dropped between departments, and no one follows up or applies pressure.

Definately sucks that they did things so poorly. But I also suppose it is better to find out now rather than a few months in. Hopefully we will be having more expansion in the future. We are going to try to do some growth over the next few years. Located in Muskegon.

Shit is real out there for sure. I am convinced the average HR person is as competent as a grocery bagger that puts the bread in with the canned goods.

I've been looking for a new job. I've had a few interviews. So far no one wants to pay... like the same pay as last time I was looking 5 years ago. The HR people are clueless with regard to benefits. They say things like "competitive total compensation package" but have no idea how the retirement, vacation, or fringe works. As an older worker, I'm not starting at the bottom. Somehow some Fortune 500 companies think that an experienced and proven worker is going to accept 2 weeks of vacation and minimal retirement.

One place got pretty close... negotiated to a $30k hit between salary and retirement (I get 13% company match which I know is rare) and up to 25 days of vacation (I get 30). I told them if they coughed up another $10k in base salary I'd bite but nope. So they ended up going with someone internally that cost way more than I was asking and has none of the skills I have (not kidding, hiring manager said so). That person hasn't accepted yet, the only reason they wanted it is because they're capped in their current role and the job has a higher salary. So it's not that they couldn't pay me more, the compensation department just chose not to despite what the whole food chain of the hiring manager said. They kept increasing the signing bonus which meh? $15k doesn't even buy a used car these days. Kind of got a bad feeling from the HR person even though the whole team was awesome.

Had the same exact experience with Quicken Loans a million years ago.

Make your best deal going in, as that's the best bargaining leverage you will ever have.
Lost my UP job Nov 2021. Got in with a contract house for GM around xmas 2021. Background check was fine, but they wanted a very specific piss test. I had 3 choices Madison WI, Milwaukee WI, Grand Rapids, MI. I told them if they weren't paying for mileage and lodging I wasn't going. They fought it till I told them fine bye, suddenly Escanaba was OK in their book. They still managed to fuck that up but I ended up getting the job.
Locally, in Ionia, there's a company called Ventra, I apply there every time they post an opening, it's a block from my house. I never get so much as a thank you for applying from them. Literally no acknowledgement that I applied. Position has been posted 2 years now, they're probably telling Bob and Jim who are carrying the slack, gosh guys, no one wants to work out there! :ROFLMAO:

I have an in person interview this afternoon for the same base pay at another company, still plenty of jobs for me out there.

I'm glad I'm fortunate enough that missing a couple weeks of work won't bankrupt me, but having left my old job could have really screwed me. I can't collect unemployment, I voluntarily quit. I can't sue Walbro, it's not a binding contract. Companies are really out there doing this to people? That's terrible.
The right thing will pop up for you this kind of shit always has a way of working out in the long run.

Indeed, I just had an interview that went well and expect an offer Monday.

It's just a really messed up way to go, I even knwo they haven't even called anyone. No references, no HR... And HR is too lazy to step up, what a shitshow lol.
I think you should keep working the Walbro angle. When they finally get their shit together to hire you you can set a start date and show up. Start getting into the system. Then say "this place is a shitshow" and leave.

That would be fun, except they already hired me and gave me a start date, so those things are not terribly meaningful.
I'm saying that since you'll probably have another job lined up with a start date by then just show up with no intent of actually working at Walbro. Just so you can giggle on the way out saying that their background check was delayed and it's clearly a shitshow so you will be joining someone else's three ring circus.

NAPA did the same thing to a friend of mine, hired then ghosted them and claimed the HR manager left when he finally got through. Then they ghosted him again after sending him through the process and saying that they were hired.

That is an accurate assessment. They also are all coming out of the same liberal HR brainwashing schools and setting policy accordingly. We used to have 2 HR people, then we bought another company of equal size that was more 'corporate' and now we have 8 or so HR people. I swear they just think up policy to validate their jobs.

They have 0 connection to what we in the field are doing, and making policy that directly affects us. I have lost perks every year.

We pushed back and won last year, but this year I think the sales and management staff will lose.

Examples: for decades spouses if needed, could drive our company vehicle because we pay for personal use - that is gone this year. It wouldn't normally be a big deal, but my wifes daily has historically been our tow rig. If I need the tow rig then she would take the company truck to work. Additionally, they took towing away from us as well. The 'personal use' is being so restricted on many levels that it is not personal use anymore.

Same with firearms: We do company hunts, and take customers hunting and shooting. They have now said we cannot have a firearm in the vehicle, no matter how legal it is. Most of the sales staff have CPL's. We go to sketchy areas, unlike the office staff.

In reality it is first world problems, but longer term staff is getting pretty fed up with losing a little every year. These are probably some of the more minor things, a more major example is they screw with our bonus structure almost every year now, and it is obviously a ploy to get out of paying it to us. They want huge growth in a niche market all while not investing to actually get the growth they want.

Unfortunately the niche market I am in makes it pretty hard to jump to a new company, as that means starting all over. Starting all over to a new company on training means a pretty big wage/benefit cut to the guy they are onboarding.

Last I counted we had 249 people in our HR department, including 1 SVP and 2 VPs. 53 of those people are flagged as "management". My executive director has 221 technical and professional staff. The VP my executive director reports to has ~1600 people. Modern HR policy is that no supervisor should have less than 4 reports at any level and the ideal band is 6-11 subordinates. Our HR department has no person with 6-11 subordinates.

My experience with HR people is that they aren't paid real well. They also don't work real hard and don't really know much. So they don't understand why they don't get paid much which since they see Engineers making 2x as much they wonder why and decided to just loosely go through the motions doing the minimum to not get terminated. The ones that do like to do good work don't stick around long. HR is one department I've never understood why companies don't outsource. They're rarely worth their weight in asphalt millings and they're a dime a dozen to replace.

A friends wife works in HR. He is a stay at home boy toy and she makes over 300k a year. She just has had to move around a bit and change jobs every few years.
This is why I avoided big companies during my career. I have an issue, I can walk right into the owner's office. I may not like what I hear, but the rules come from the guy who signs my check.
