I've come home early from vacation, turned around on my way to vacation and had hours of work during vacation. I take the shitty phone calls from a pissed off customer. I make decisions for the stupidest questions because people are afraid (or incapable of) making a decision. People can't make common sense decisions. It's crazy.

For many years I found myself always moving to a leadership role. It's not because I WANT to take charge, it's because others CAN'T take charge. They won't make a decision and then get pissed when someone else does.

And then the "them against us" mind set. LOL People want to be paid "before" they gain a skill. No, you get paid more "when" you gain a skill. They want to milk the job thinking they are sticking it to the company, then bitch when their bonus is small at bonus time. They aren't smart enough to figure out that until the company makes more money, THEY won't make more money. It's simple economics.

I know people talk about me "sitting up there in that cushy office". Fucken-A-Right! They have no idea that I started out pushing a broom just like they did. The difference is that I was willing to take the risk and step up to opportunities instead of stepping away from them. NEVER turn down an opportunity. It may never come around a second time.

So, if you've advanced into a management position and are willing to do what it takes, be proud of it, don't be guilty.
These bits right here are hard learned life lessons that us younger guys better pay attention to and remember. Experience and wisdom like this are hard to find these days.

He goes and asks for a raise and the boss says no. So, he quits and takes a job where they are paying 11. Now his boss has to replace him and the market is thin. He may actually have to pay $12/hr to replace the guy who would have stayed for 11. Year ago I decided I wanted to be the replacement guy.

Complacency will net you nothing but a secure position and nothing more.
This is the first place I have worked where I had to ask for a raise. Lapeer Metal Stamping would throw at least $1.00/hr annually. The management position here was no gain financially, I wanted to lower the amount of time on the road. I stepped into a steaming pile. No control over budget, personnel, scheduling, or inventory. Owners would bypass me to schedule service techs for their own customers. Tried to set up a service database and system for scheduling and keeping track of service invoicing and completion dates. I was told I was spending 'too much time on the computer'. So- I said keep it and went back on the road. There is currently no one handling the service department. No one wants it. Upper management has designated 3 other people to do it, and they all said forget it. They did manage to find another service tech/programmer, he hasn't even been here long enough to get his first check and he's putting in apps at other shops.

Me- I'm just floatin down the river to see where it takes me.

That's crazy, i've always had to battle for a raise, here, i was just going about my business and they were like, "it's review time", which I ignored lol. Then I got a 5% raise lol, just for doing my job.

At Lapeer, my boss would come over and say "Got you another $1.50, keep up the good work."

All I did was make sure the equipment got greased and oiled on schedule, amazing how that reduces downtime.

The longer I was there, the more I took on. Even taught myself ladder logic so we didn't have to pay someone to come in and repair our PLC based stuff.

And then the second generation took over and drove that place into the ground.

Most people I know, myself included do/did it.
10 years ago my wife and I were making a combined 70/80k. Childcare for one was $800/month. We had to put off kids. With our minimal lifestyle then I have no idea how we would have had a kid, we were already cut to the bone.

I know what we make now, and I still have to give some things the side-eye before I do it.

I just cannot comprehend it.

You need to lower your definition of 'shit'.

For the first 10 years of marriage, we did not have a car worth more than $500, lived in the south end of Warren in a $500/month house, bought clothes at Value Village, and ate house brand food from Spartan stores.

Never did go on assistance though. That was when I found out I was a Republican, a co-worker had his girlfriend move in and she collected food stamps since they were not married. I found that to be dishonest as hell.

The difference between being truly appreciated and taken for granted is enormous.

Again though, out on the floor, they take people for granted regularly, treat them like they're disposable. To a certain degree they are, but damn, when someone is conscientious, thorough, hard working, and eager to learn, throw them a bone. Not a pat on the back, some money, in their check... I just had a huge blow up with production management over that. They burn through people, and I have to start all over with new ones. I told them, when someone does something good, toss em a gift card, a fifty cent raise costs us alot less than down time from a new hire, etc.

It seems to have gotten through, I know the kid I used for my example got a raise.
