Very frugal day today! Started with an almost free set of JK Adjustable control arms and ended with a set of TJ control arms. Cut the tube inserts out, took 4" out of the arms, pressed out the old factory style bushings, welded back together. Bam.

Also yesterday I installed my side panels and sold the wheels/tires. So it's looking pretty sad - I didn't even have enough rollers to make it roll! So it's time to crap or get off the pot - to 8 lug or not to 8 lug.

Are you going to keep it or sell it? Keep it = eight lug

I'd have to agree that logic

Yes I'm keeping it silly goose! This is gonna sound super lame I get it - but I have never done it before so I am just a bit reluctant - uncharted territory.. Otherwise, I'm still waiting to see if I get this job offer so that is mostly why I haven't pulled the trigger.

I did however call and talk to R&R Fabwerks yesterday @sbcrichie and see if he was still working due to this Covid deal - and he is. He is a couple weeks out but I would have him do the brackets on the axles and probably build the track bar and steering.

So yesterday all I did to the thing was change around the wheels and tires so it would roll/possibly drive. I did mow the grass so it looked all fancy just in time to have accumulation overnight - but that's another story.

Back into axle conversations. The axle set due to cost and availability are 99-04 Super Duty. I suffered a serious setback yesterday in that the set of matched $400 4.30 geared SD axles, the front turns out to be a D50. That isn't the end of the world, but Ill get back to that in a minute.

They had/have a set of 4.10 SD axles and allegedly the front is indeed a 60, but I think the rear is open. They sold one set yesterday and are checking this morning and hopefully have another set. I think I can get a set at these at the same cost.

The thought was to leave the 4.30'd gears for an unknown amount of time to keep the original cost down, and those should be sufficient. The rear had a LS and there again, that would be better than open. The 4.10 gears I think would be worse and absolutely have to be changed pretty quick - adding additional extra costs. (On a 37")

So whilst waiting to hear back on the set of 4.10's I am pondering the D50. Before you wig out - think of this. A $200 axle that isnt crusty and comes out of a running driving truck - $500 for at truss. I can't build my current D30 to even match that gearset and it handle 37's, nor can I buy a stock Rubi 44 for that money, nor would it handle a 37 as is. The only thing I don't know is if you can buy a lock right or the likes for a D50. Do you?

Again I won't be hardrcore wheeling most likely, but I definitely want to run a 37 and I think the costs will be considerably greater to upgrade a D30 or D44 to make it handle it. If I punt, then I'll just run 35's on these factory axles and at least it's a driver..

I digress and welcome positive conversation. I'll leave you with some pics of it on rollers and said fresh grass.

Powertrax D50 Lock-Right

I've always thought the D50 was an underappreciated axle but I do get the fact that it is more like a D44 R&P. And why put all that time and money into an axle and then have strength issues down the road. If it were me I'd pass on building a D50.

In my opinion if your planning on re gearing eventually skip the d50. I dont think you would notice much difference between 4.10s and 4.30s anyway

So I heard back from the joint and they do indeed have a matched set of 4.10 SD axles, but alas the front is again a 50.

@Ryanw10 I feel pretty good that a 4.30'd gear on 37's would be sufficient for my needs.

@xj4life They get a whole lotta hate from what I am reading. The fact remains they're better than a 44. My gosh they are under 8k pound diesel excursions!

Nevertheless, it will surely be unpopular, but I think i'm gonna roll with it. I am going to sleep on it, but I keep ending on this: $200 complete out of a running driving truck. Artec has a 20% and free shipping deal right now, that puts the truss at like $383 but lets say for argument sake I'm at $600 in the axle. Then lets say I pay $400 to have the truss welded on. For a $1000 I am able to bolt in* a ONE TON axle that will handle a 37" tire....

*have to build steering and a track bar.

Ok, flame on.

4.30 gears with 37s seems like it would be a bit slow. I run 4.56 gears on 35s and it's a good match both on and off road. Offroad I do wish I was more like 4.88 or 5.13

Nobody ever complains about going to a lower gear. If you go too low the only time you'll complain is on the highway.

Otherwise went to work yesterday and did some more frugal control arm stuff... JK front uppers cut down. I do have Barnes Enduro joints on the way. Please excuse the welds..

I have 5.13 with 35's. jEeP has a 5.3 in it. Do you run the drags at the dunes at all? If yes, can you run low range, or do you run out of speed?
My junk runs out of gear unless I am in hi range. I need a power adder to get more jump off the line. Thinking a 100 horse shot would help a lot.

To the OP, I would be going lower if possible. Mine runs 80 mph with no issue on 5.13s with a 4 speed auto...

Yea I do a lot of drags at the dunes and run in low range without running out of speed. I'm very happy with my jump off the line too but my 5.3 is fairly built. Somewhere between 400-450hp is my guess.

D44 on 37's is fine. Put decent axle shafts in and run it. You said yourself you're running trails and the dunes with occasional rock crawling........don't over complicate it.

Brandon I may just do that. I was just talking to a guy I sold a part out Rubicon to, and he'd do $1500 for the front axle. I'm just butthurt it is scaley.

Ill decide tomorrow!

Thanks for the input!
