Default Silverado Bumper/Bed build

A week ago during some bad weather, I was tooling along 96 in my daily 2500HD, maybe 60 mph. There was a car in the ditch so I was being cautious since I didn't know why the car was in the ditch.

Then along came a hero in his POS 95 Z71 on bald Uniroyal Laredos hammering down past me and the other cars in line with me. Capt. Dipshit lost control, PIT maneuvered my truck, bounced off my truck into the cable thing, slid down that for about 20 yards, shot back into traffic and took out a little Acura SUV. GOod times.

So I cut the bumper off and stuffed a new taillight on it the next day after I whaled on it with a 3lb sledge a bit.

So now I can sort of drive it around at least, I was pretty bummed, I really like this truck. The damage is superficial, the frame is fine, it drives fine, he just hit that corner of the bed.

So, I bought a CUT50P plasma cutter, a 4 x 8 sheet of 3/16, and some strips of 1/4 x 8 flat bar to build a bumper. My stock one wasn't all rotted out like a lot are, but it was probably a matter of time.

I started looking for a bed, but anything in the area is 1000 and "just needs a patch". I'm good. So I looked south, I like road trips. I found a bunch for 3-400 bucks in Tennessee/Arkansas/Georgia, so with the trip, I'd be into them for 800 or so by the time I got home. Then I'd have to paint them, because none of them were red, go figure.

I thought of building a flatbed, but I hate flatbeds and how you can't just throw stuff in them. I like to haul around miscellaneous junk.

Then I remembered seeing a M101 bed used as a truck bed, like this,

It would seem the supply of M101 trailers has dried up. I looked at an M105, but it's way too big, and by the time I section it I could have just bought the steel and built one that style for alot less.

So, I'm just going to go back and get more steel and build my own to the M101 dimensions, so I can use the M101 stake sides and canopy, which would be pretty cool I think.

Since we're in a Polar Vortex, and I have to work in the driveway, I'll probably sit the week out until the temp get's back into the 20's and 30's, it's hard to work when touching your tools causes frostbite lol.

I like the idea but Why not let the insurance deal with it seeing as that dumb ass is going to be paying for it in the long run.

No, I just canceled the claim and took it home.

I did find an M101 bed on here, I'm going to go take a look at it tomorrow. I can save alot of time by buying one, but if it won't fit right, it won't fit right.

It's been too cold to do anything outside worthwhile.

IMHO I don't like the M101 bed. I'd personally look for another bed for that model truck and put it on. Any reason you're not looking into that?

A stock bed?

Because people want 1000 bucks for one that just needs a patch lol. To drive south and get one for 4-500 would cost me as much as I intend to pay for this M101 trailer.

My bed was rusty but it didn't show, I'd imagine my new bed would rust in a few years again.

The M101 bed, or whatever I build, will be much thicker and more durable.

For the M101 beds, they have S250 shelters, the canopies, and all kinds of neat stuff that slot right into them and it doesn't cost much.

Ok, just curious. I've never had to purchase a bed before so I had no clue they were that much.

Ig it helps, there is a place near Canton, OH off of I77 that has lots of used beds, for almost anything. I believe they are new take-offs usually.

What about a steel or aluminum flatbed?

This is a place by my house, kinda pricy but it may outlive your rig and be used again or sold off later... they have a shit ton of them in stock at the moment

If he doesn't want to pay a grand for a used bed, I assume he doesn't want to pay 2k+ for one of those.

Wow That is a freaking joke on them. A bed swap and repaint and make some minor frame work would not even come close to totaling it out. Got to love them sometimes.

What I pay for a bed is not what Joe Mallcrawler's body shop bills insurance for lol.

Honestly I could have another bed on the truck for not much more than the cost of the M101, I just like all the cool stuff they make for the M101.

Otherwise I can build a bed like an M101 for about half the cost of buying this trailer.

I did actually find one in Ohio that's red and supposedly rust free, but I get kind of sketched out about it. If I drive 9 hours and there's rust on it, after I asked how much rust was on it... I'm going to jail in Ohio

My goal isn't to get a bed on it as cheap as possible. I could just put a new tailgate on and a 100 Ebay bumper and be done, I already beat it enough to get a tail light in there. 03-07 tail lights don't work with a 99-02 harness BTW lol.

I want something more durable and versatile that will last alot longer. And I hate flatbeds. You can't put a Coke can on flatbed without tying it down lol.

So I picked this up today, actually found it on the classifieds section here.

It measures very close to the stock bed, the inside is a bit smaller though.

Probably should have bought some 4x4's before I took my old bed off.
