Default Lapeer gravel pit is closed

WTF Michigan DNR? Website doesn't say jack shit about it. Wasted an hour to drive up there only to find that it's closed for "renovations".

Apparently it is supposed to open again in August. Not sure what they are doing to it. They better not be turning into an Elmer Fudd safe space.

When I opened this I thought it was going to say closed due to covid-19. Either way, that blows.

FYI: All the regulated/manned DNR ranges are closed due to COVID-19

Couldn't say for clubs or private ranges.... I have not inquired. Probably varies by range.

You know what's even better right now than driving 2 hours to go shoot guns? Staying the fukc at home. I really wish people would wrap their heads around this whole "non-essential travel" idea. This affects all of us and crap like this is going to continue dragging it out indefinitely for ALL of us. Just. Stay. Home.

It was planned. I heard about it a while back, I was told they are making it into a legit DNR range.

I had a love hate relationship with the pit. I love to do a few mag dumps while I'm shooting, but I don't like the guy that puts a TV and other trash on a few pounds of tannerite 10 yards away, and shit comes raining down on me (I didn't realize he had put tannerite under it, just asumemed he was making a pile of junk to shoot)

I have never been to the gravel pit. But after going to a DNR range I will never go back.

Mostly because the 'range master' was a young kid with half a brain and I was the only one there. It was an aggravating experience to say the least.

yeah, because going outside to do recreation per the exemption within executive order will make you magically get coors light virus right?

Training is absolutely essential. Considering it involves not having contact with other people, it'd be pretty hard to get sick while doing it.

+1

When reasonable folks are there, it's fun. It gets packed sometimes too. I just can't see how they plan to have it "manned" as small of a space that it is.

Ever since that incident when it is busy, I keep driving and go shooting down the seasonal road, there are a few good places to shoot down there.

The only thing I went to the pit for was to shoot 7.62x54R. Since it's no longer cheap and easy to buy, I don't shoot it much anymore. (I did shoot it in the back yard, but when it penetrated the target, and the tree behind it, and went on for God knows how far, I decided against it until I can make a proper berm)

yea, I was thinking about doing that, but the seasonal road isn't in season yet. Probably could have parked at the gate and walked.

It was nice to at least get out away from the house. I stopped at the VFW so the kids could walk around a few minutes and look at the Huey.

I was talking about the travel, not the shooting. I have no problem with shooting or outdoor activity, I highly encourage both. It's the unnecessary travel bullshit that people love skirting the rules on that's going to keep spreading this around and keeping us all, not just you, in this mess that much longer.

How does driving somewhere spread the virus? Obviously direct contact person to person does.... But if I drive to a park, then drive home, where is the contact?

You're going outside your personal "bubble" for non-essential hobby travel. If you're unknowingly infected, anything you touch is now a point for spread to others. Range tables, bathroom, gas pumps, snack stops, whatever. Same applies for anything you touch that could have been previously touched by someone either knowingly or unknowingly infected. It's an unnecessary risk for spread and defeats the purpose of the stay at home order. Is the world magically going to explode because you went to the range? Nope. But people ignoring the whole purpose of the order increases the spread, drags this thing out longer, and indirectly affects my life and livelihood, so I give a shit when people are too stubborn and/or ignorant to play it safe for a couple weeks. When so many people are still out and about it'll get dragged out to months instead of weeks and we'll ALL be stuck in this mess because of it. That's how.
