Default what do you think of mini-spools?

for the rear? I have a rear dana 44 in my cj and am wanting to put in mini-spool. my upgrade budget is kinda tight since there is much that I wanna do, so this would lock my rear for about 60 bucks. I am also going to be getting an aussie locker for my front dana 30 and warn premium lockouts.

it is not a DD by any means, but I do like to drive it to work once in a while. I have known a few people with mini-spools and have gotten mixed feelings from all.

let me know what you think!!

thanks
Justin

It's a decent cheap upgrade if your Jeep isn't going to see alot of asphalt. Since you won't be DDing it much, I'd say go for it. You can always upgrade to a locker later if you choose. I'd just take it easy when you do drive it to work taking it around the corners.

I ran one for a little while in a 9" rear with no problems, but It does put alot of stress on the center (diff) pin. I think you can get a hardned diff pin to use with it

I run one in the rear(full spool)....just cheaper than a locker and does basically the same thing.Tires bark around corners and its a little hairy when there is snow on the roads....but I only drive around town once in a while.

I toasted one in a 9" running 35's. Went to a full spool and never had a problem.

If you are later planning on gettin a lunch-box locker then put a mini spool in there with a cromo cross pin. If you later want a full carrier locker then just weld up the diff. Way cheaper then a mini spool and stronger if done right.

My 8.8 is welded, love it. And my rig is trail use only.

a mini spool may be cheap now... But I have replaced many a parts for people for exploded carries and ring gears. The factory open carrier isn't strong enough to be abused with the mini spool. Like mentioned it would be better to weld it up.
