Default Jeep JL motor options

Any thoughts on the 3.6L vs 2.0L I4 Turbo? I'm not sold on this trend in the auto industry for smaller displacement and turbos, especially in a Jeep. Girlfriend is in the market for a 2020 JL and trying to steer her away from the I4 but open minded if I'm wrong in my assumptions.

I believe originally, on the JL, the I4 was Hybrid only, but might be available without now.

I really like the turbo 4 cylinder in my 2019 Ranger, but never had complaints with the 3.6l in my JK.

It’s a tough call. I have driven both, stock and lifted with bigger tires. The little 4 is pretty surprising. I have not seen issues with either at the dealership level. My wife went from a hemi Grand Cherokee to a turbo Cherokee and feels the overall performance is great. Best bet would be to drive them as much as the dealer will allow. I believe that the fuel economy is better with the turbo.

Iíve been really impressed with how the 3.6/8speed moves my 15 grand Cherokee around and thatís a nearly 5k lb suv. Plus I average low 20s mpg everywhere going 10 over. But Iíve heard the 2.0T is ďfasterĒ I would personally be concerned with maintenance.

That's one of my main concerns...they say turbo and electric motor and all I hear is $$$$$$ repair costs down the road.

Exactly. I've spent a lot of time in JLs and JTs, mostly lifted, all with the 3.6L. The 3.6/8spd combo is a fantastic powertrain combo for a midsize and is tough to beat. I've heard the turbo 4 is impressive as hell and delivers better acceleration and MPG stock. If you plan to lift it with bigger tires you'll probably see a much larger drop than you would with the V6 though because it'll essentially live in boost at that point. It's also a complexity nightmare and maintenance and reliability would scare me longterm. Personally I'd be holding out for the Ecodiesel for the power and MPG. Probably won't have the fun factor of the 3.6 but it'll be a workhorse in comparison.
