Thanks for the comments, we went with the 3/16 for the lower frame. We are in desperate need for some stock rear XJ springs. If anyone has a pair, please let me know.

We had a very productive couple of days on the Jeep this weekend. We began building the frame and finally found and got rear XJ leaf springs.

Continuing on with the frame, we made all of the body mounts. Due to the condition of the tub, most original body mounts were unusable and created a real challenge. We came up with 9 good mounts instead of the original 13 but itís nice and secure.

After finishing the body mounts, we started messing around to figure out where the axles where going to sit.

Hoping for 7 inch stretch in the rear and 5 in the front giving a wheelbase of ~106

Thinking right around here is where the stock axle would be

Man, those full width SD axles will be WIIIDE

Did some mocking up for the rear axle today, along with starting the rear bumper. We are using XJ springs backwards and mounted to the bumper to get a stretch. Iíve been looking at threads and pictures for ideas, does anybody have any hot tips or things to watch for that we may not have considered.

Update... we added fish-plate to the rear frame sections, installed the rear springs a few times until we settled on this location. Iím pretty happy with this stretch and stance.

Finally saved up enough pennies to get the ruff stuff 3 link and fox 2.0 14Ē air shocks.

We met up with an awesome guy last week and he gave us some awesome tips on making my SD 60 a passenger side drop. So, we got to cutting... no going back now.

Love the project. What's the intended use? If you plan to wheel in the rocks, the rear shackles are vulnerable.

The Jeep is mostly going to be a terrible daily driver with going to rocks and valleys and silver lake as much as possible. I know that the rear shackles are vulnerable but with the XJ springs and the stretch, itís the only setup that works, at least until I 4-link it down the road. 14 year old budget struggles.

Hey, no problem, I think it's a great thing to do with your son. Should be an awesome rig for the intended use.

It has been a great project with lots of bonding time so far. Jack is learning a lot about shop tools, safety and critical thinking. Most importantly in the instant gratification world we live, he is learning patience. Speaking of patience... I canít wait to get my barn back. Itís really crowded in there!!!

From what I gather, John D is the father and Jeepheap is the son.

I forgot to add this picture. This is what we came up with for the front of the leaf springs.

Also, look at these sweet 2Ē 47 spline stub shafts we saw at a neighborhood shop. Heís making them for competition rigs.

A little bit of progress this weekend. Started out by finishing the frame by making a front bumper and fish platting the mid-upper section. We also began completely welding up every thing else.

Finally was able to located and buy a Chevy 350. A guy at the shop I work made a good deal for me. We bolted the transmission and transfer case to it, man that thing is HEAVY! We started to mark up where itís going to sit and started making motor mounts.

Been practicing my welding skills also.
