Anywho, so other than the max gear being 4.88, it looks like these will not burst into flames if you leave 12 volt on them?

So I see you yourself have one of these axles in your truck. Would you put one of these under a Jeep? It looks like I will walk away for a couple hundred bucks for one.

Pros:
Big disk brakes
E locker
Cheap
No need to convert front SD to different bolt pattern

Cons:
pretty wide
Only goes to 4.88 gears

Not sure what else. How about it how far it hangs... Does it hang lower than a 14 bolt?

Idk about in a jeep. Maybe rich can answer better on that one.

Mine has a tcm bypass on it, so it stays locked over 25 mph. I didn't realize the bypass stays on after ignition is off. Killed both my batteries. Did this twice before I knew what was happening. That was last or year before, still works lol.

Ok, noted. It looks like this axle has considerable* more ground clearance than a 14 bolt. It's at least 35 spline but I see something about 37 spline also so I dont super understand that. (more research to do).

*I am using this term loosely.
@frdtrckmnrich Rich what do you think about using one of these 11' and up Ford 10.5's under a jeep? Have you done one?

The 37 spline is the new pinion size ie bigger diameter in the last few years of production which is only available down to 4.88 I believe. Older design goes down to 5.38

99-04 rear is 67-68” wide from research, 05 up is 70-71”

I see no reason not to if you can make the gear options work. I have not used one of those axles in a build yet.

Gents,

I believe that I am a step closer to this somewhat of a midlife crisis build, as I have the LJ on it's way in from Texas as we speak.

So let's get back on topic!!

I have a source that has Super Duty stuff coming out their ears. I had all but decided on the 11' and up rear axle per recommendations here, and the 05 and up SD60. Turns out that 11' and up rear axle is a good bit more, so I am kinda now leaning towards that 99-04 setup.

I can get myself into a set of 99-04's complete end to end for $500. That's in either 4.10 or 4.30. The 4.30 set the rear has a LS. My thought is that I could tool around in some 4.30's and maybe add a lunchbox to the front, while I save up for gears and a good rear locker.

Thoughts?

I really don't want to have to mess with narrowing, and the 99-04 on the bonus needs far less labor to get all the yuck off.

I was hoping to save a buck on the rear and not include a truss, just basic axle brackets but it doesnt seem that artec does that sort of thing - I should check barnes. But then that's a 4 link setup - was kinda thinking factory style. But im staring at a solid $1000 in just bracketry.

Here is a shot of the Jeep.. I havent actually seen it with my own eyes so I am not sure if this is really my keeper or not..

Are you thinking 99-04 front or rear?

Morris rose in Kalamazoo has a 12 rear 4.30 with elocker for $795

Both front and rear 99-04. I can get the pair for $500. They have 05 and up fronts for $450. I’ll have to ask about the 11 up rears but they had several of those too - sounds like those might be a bit more pricey.

$795 for an axle that's already geared correctly with an elocker in it is not a bad price at all. You'll spend that much putting gears and a lunchbox in one. If you go with the 05+, you can put 1550 shafts in for $350 or so. Food for thought.

And search car-part. Com for a front. I've found 05+ for as little as $200.

99-04 have weaker bearings & 30 spline outer,

They make 35 spline stub replacements.

But the 05+ is already 35 spline. And imo the stubs themselves are significantly stronger oem. Plus you can get relatively cheap replacement 1580 jointed shafts for the 05+
