Default 5.3L Wranglee No 4Low

My TJ wrangler has a a 5.3L 4l60e and 241c transfer case. Everything works as it should other than 4low. It won't shift when you engage it to 4low. Anyone have a solution to this that has done the swap? 4hi works great and gets me anywhere I need, but would like to have the option of 4low.

What kind of shifter linkage are you using?

Betting something is off in the linkage causing you not to be able to get it to fully engage.

Something even as simple as the shifter hitting body sheetmetal, my YJ had that at one point, would engage but then pop out with any vibrations.

I didn't do the swap but I'm unsure of what linkage I'm running. A guy puts these 5.3/4l60e jeeps together and sells them. My dad and I both bought one from him. Both have no 4low. It's something to do with the computer not telling the transmission to shift when it's in 4low? I've read something about installing a reluctor ring onto the output shaft of the tranny which gives it a VSS port for a sensor.

When I first did the 5.3 swap there was no way I was getting the factory linkage to work with the position I put the motor in at. I then got the Novak cable shifter and still had to modify that in order for me to utilize 4 low and 2wd

I'm not saying that I don't have an aftermarket shifter. I will have to take a look I guess. But it shifts smooth through out all the gears. But when I'm in 4low it doesn't shift out of 1st gear.

Completely different problem than I thought you were having. Vss is definitely your issue and you need to have a reading from your transmission output, not at the end of the transfercase

That's what I've been reading about. Check out this link. http://m.summitracing.com/parts/add-716073

I believe I'm heading in the right direction with this.

I've read I can run a toggle switch to the VSS that can be turned on when wanting to engage 4low? How do you go about wiring once you when the port for VSS

I have not come across that solution before but would be curious to see if it would work.
Your definitely on the right track with the summit link and I believe that is what I run in mine. If you get that though you will have to machine the output housing on the transmission to accept the sensor. I am running a 231 so I have the adapter housing that already has the hole machined

Even though my speedometer is working fine you still think it's a VSS issue? It's getting a reading from somewhere to make my speedo work.

Yes. When in 4 low your computer is reading way may revolutions than it should and does not know how to compensate for that.
Out of curiosity you didn't happen to buy the jeep from a guy named Brian did you?

Very cool, Brian is the guy who first gave me the idea to do the swap way back in high school. He also helped my buddy out with the swap and now that I think about it he had the same issue with 4 low. When I originally put the motor in I used an ax15 so I didn't have to worry about that. It wasn't til about a month ago I put in the 4l60e

Did he ever get his 4low to work? Or still running without. I have more than enough power to run in 4hi but it bugs me that 4low doesn't work.

Look in beckys build thread. She had similar issues.

I believe your vss needs to see the reading before the tcase (before gear reduction from 4lo). And have your ecm tuned to a 2wd.

I get that right @feva4u?

Atleast that how I understood it would work on mine.

subscribed... mine does the same thing. I was thinking of putting an hd-2 shift kit in the trans. as I already have a ratchet shifter then It would shift when I tell it to aka when I ratchet the shifter it will in theory shift. curious to see if you get it to work the correct way though

Yep you got it right. The GM computer gets all freaked out thinking it is going way faster than it actually is
