As long as the Tablet has GPS on it, you don't need the internet. Just get an app that allows you to download maps before you head out. I use a 10" tablet running Backcountry Navigator. Been using it for several years without issue.

I run 3 different apps. Back Country Navigator, My Trails and OsmAnd+. Back Country Navigator and My Trails have awesome topo maps. OsmAnd+ is great as-is for recorded roads and trails. I don't download anything to it but use it for general around town and trail riding. Agreed on the gps in the tablet. You MUST make sure your tablet has gps capability, not just a data plan.

My biggest problem is I don't upload and download maps and tracks enough to be fluent with it. But I don't ever anticipate buying another $600 gps.

Although I still use my Garmin, when it dies I won't buy another one for offroad.

My old eyes don't like the tiny screen while driving. Those behind me get pissed when I have to stop and put on my reading glasses at each turn.

I have a Garmin Montana, I really love it, but I do more then just leave it in my vehicle. I've snowmobiled with it, hiked and geocached with it, occasionally I have mnt biked with it, and I've used it in my boat but don't currently have any of the marine maps in it. It's the best all around for in and out of a vehicle, big enough screen in a vehicle and small enough to be a good handheld. I had a Garmin Oregon before that but the screen was too small for in a vehicle.

The next choice wold be the new Magellon that just came out, forget what it's called.

But honestly, if I were looking for just something for inside my Jeep I would do what Whiterhino and some others are doing now, just use a small tablet.

Thanks for the replys.... educate me. To get a tablet to work with GPS is there an additional service required? Does it have the ability to plug in an external antenna? I never had a need for a tablet, but..... now I may! With those programs / apps can you "track" your position? Setup routes like you can on the Garmin and other GPS units?

If you have a smart phone, down load back country navigator and start playing around with it, I have it on my phone and toy with it every once in a while. This will give you and idea how it works. Turn on airplane mode and see it still work if you have loaded the proper maps and have gps/location turned on while in air plane mode.

Many (maybe most?) have GPS capability. If you're buying a cheap Android based tablet, spend the extra 5 minutes and make sure it has it.

Yeah, they have them that can connect through USB cable or Bluetooth. I would try without and see how often signals are dropped before buying an external antenna.

I found the back country difficult to navigate all the options.

Back Country Navigator is a pain to figure out the maps but once you have it down loaded it works great. You can connect to a computer/laptop via USB cable to store/upload/download tracks. This is my problem area that I haven't figured out well. Primarily because I still use my Garmin for established tracks/maps.

I have never lost a signal with my tablet as-is without an antenna. It's a 7" Samsung, about 5 years old.

View Ranger is another good app for GPS for tablets. They have a new feature that looks pretty cool called skyview. Have not played with it yet, but it uses your camera to view the area in front of you and projects the route on top of it.
