Default Advice needed on trail cameras

I am going to pick up a trail camera for our woods. What should I be looking for in one? Brands to look for good/bad?

Thanks!

I have about a dozen or so from Wildgame Innovations that are "modern". Most of them are 8-10mp but I also have some ancient ones from them from 15+ years ago. I leave them on video with a 32GB card in them. Lasts about 3 months before the 8x AA batteries are toast and that's about when they run out of capacity on the card. I usually get them on clearance at Menards after hunting season is over in the $30-40 range the last few years.

The ones with the 940nm infrared LEDs are the way to go.

Depending on where they're going to be, the intent, and the distance from the house, I'd consider solar panels and wireless cameras if you think you can reach them. I've largely switched to running POE or solar wireless cameras everywhere. Most of my cameras are now Reolink with a SDcard slot as that's all I've been buying the last few years as cameras die/add more cameras. Probably at 50+ cameras now? Can pick up the cheapie POE 5mp cameras for ~$38 on sale and throw a 64GB SDcard in it. Then just monitor/record centrally certain cameras.

I like my Browning, I would have to look up model. It was $99 and I have a customer that says it beat his $150 camera's photo's. The Browning also has a faster trigger speed and catches nearly everything. The Stealth cams I had would always miss what they were shooting.

I'd stay away from the Stealthcams, I have never had one last more than one season/3months. They do replace them, but they show up like 6-8 months later.

Not really. It's more of so I know what happened if the needs arise or if we're away.

I've watched people pull up around the house, step out, see the cameras in the back porch, make an abrupt return to their vehicle, then back down 300' of driveway because they think I didn't get their plate on the way in and they can avoid it if they don't turn around.

The ones out in the woods are for trespassers. They're really aggressive here.

Most of my 'hood has been broken into at least twice since we moved here nearly a decade ago. The most I've had is some kids steal an armload of firewood.

There are downsides. The biggest one is when you get to watch a racoon systematically kill your chickens slowly and painfully for shits and giggles (catch, tear up, release, rinse, repeat, and never eat them).

Where are you at Wrath? I am NW of town and we hardly have any break in problems. Mailboxes on the other hand have been an issue. I am glad to see this thread as well becuase I want to add a few new cameras before season. Has anyone tried the "black" infrared light ones?

I live by the failed eco farm.

The break-ins are usually from drug addicts. The cops usually figure out which one within a week but by then they've already gotten rid of the easy to fence stuff. I think the last two have been from that brick shithole across from Jet's. Usually the Sheriff comes first since we're not in the city then they kick it to Chelsea Podunk because they realize it is probably one of their frequent flyers.

Once in a while we have people go door to door trying under guise to try to sell shit or services. Then they drive by late at night to count cars and lights. Usually a week or two after that is when the break-ins happen and it is usually during the day.

My mailbox gets sniped by drunks at least a couple times a year. Speaking of which, we're overdue.

I have a bunch of Terra and Cloak model Wildgame Innovations cameras. They use 940nm LEDs. The range is severely limited vs normal 850nm LEDs (the ones you can see the red glow on if you don't put a filter on them). Their regular ones probably have an easy 80' range. The 940nm is good for about 45'. In reality, at about 45' is when you can't tell what it is anyway in video mode. I only use video mode in all of my cameras.

Glad you mentioned that, the Terra and Cloak were both versions I had been looking at. I would be using them for camera stills on game trails. I will have tp keep this in mind.

We are far enough out that if we call 911 Washtenaw county just sends state police. Last time they were out here they said that this area is known for "sorting out the problems without their help".

Menards has Terra Lightsout 12mp cameras on clearance for $40. That means after 11% rebate and plus tax they're like $38. I've been buying the Samsung 32MB cards Amazon has for 5/$28. So for roughly $45 you have a game camera that takes 720p video. I bought six more in the last month. I think I have ~12 of these now. They're probably my favorite because they're easy to open to pull the card and the batteries. Most of my other ones from them are an epic PITA to open. I finally had one failure.

I have at least 20 game cameras in the woods. This past week I found one I forgot about and the last video it took was in March 2018. haha.

My long-term goal is to get remote-monitored cameras out there.

The trespassing pressure is insane this year. Twice in the last week I've seen people out there when walking the dog. One guy was "picking up leaves for a school project" but magically had a small nylon bag with what sounded like tree spikes rattling around inside and no way to carry leaves. The other was two people that I didn't talk to, they made a hasty exit... I didn't see them until they were on their way in the other direction. They didn't have anything on them or in their hands though. So might be just looky-loos.

Last year I didn't see any evidence of a single person out there...
